History

As the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi—one of the national land-grant entities created by Congress through the 1862 Morrill Act—it was established February 28, 1878.

Education

At Mississippi State, classroom teaching and learning are combined with endless experiences for students to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. With more than 175 programs leading to a baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degree, MSU is preparing its students for bright, productive futures where academics is combined with the proper tools for tackling today’s tough issues and making a difference in society.

Research

Mississippi State is one of only a few schools to earn both research and community engagement rankings from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Moreover, the National Science Foundation ranks Mississippi State among the nation’s top 100 research institutions. As the Magnolia State’s leading research university, MSU’s research expenditures totaled $226 million in 2015, accounting for 55% of the total $408 million in research and development expenditures reported by all Mississippi institutions.

Student services

The International Services Office (ISO) assists international students and scholars on campus with immigration counseling, document issuance, and campus related services. Serving as the liaison between the university and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ISO ensures compliance with federal regulations regarding international student/scholar immigration documents and responsibilities, including regular immigration orientation sessions, employment and status maintenance advising, and government reporting.

Housing services

College View is a partnership development that gives Upper-Division students the option of on-campus apartment living. Students can choose from studio, one bedroom, two bedroom, and four bedroom floor plans and will be only located steps away from class. All apartments will be fully furnished and utilities are included in the rent.

Library services

The primarily serving students and faculty of the College of Art, Architecture and Design, the CAAD Library welcomes the public and provides information on related subjects such as city planning, art, construction, landscape architecture and interior design. Library faculty and staff assist patrons and provide guidance to all library resources on the MSU campus.

ICT services

Information Technology Services (ITS) was created in 1998 from a merger of the Thomas E. Tramel Computing Center and the Telecommunications department. Merging of these two organizations was precipitated by the accelerating convergence of voice and data information processing and networking technologies.

Medical services

The mission of the Mississippi State University Student Health Services is to prevent disease where possible, if prevention is not possible then to cure, where cure is not possible to control, where control is not possible to console, but to do all of this with compassion, integrity, and respect for our patients.

Sports facilities

Bulldog X classes provide a positive group training work out experience that is perfect for all skill and fitness levels.  Our Bulldog X schedule consist of over 60 classes of various styles to aid patrons in meeting their weekly fitness goals.
