History

Founded in 1865, the University of Maine is a land, sea and space grant institution, and the flagship campus of the University of Maine System. Located in Orono along the banks of the Stillwater River, this vibrant and dynamic university serves Maine, the nation, and the world through its teaching, research and outreach mission.

Education

UMaine offers more than 100 degree programs through which students can earn graduate certificates, master’s, doctoral or professional science master’s degrees. Opportunity for all members of the University of Maine community and its constituents is a cornerstone of our mission.

Career

The University of Maine Career Center, a department within the Division of Student Life, serves all students and fee-paying alumni of the University of Maine. Through its services and programs, the Center promotes effective career planning skills, teaches job search strategies, and facilitates contacts between University of Maine students and alumni and employers. The Career Center offers assistance to students as they explore their academic interests and the relationship between majors and career opportunities.

Student services

The Multicultural Student Center (MSC) serves a community of culturally diverse students. We are a resource and advocate for traditionally underrepresented student populations. The Center empowers multicultural students and their organizations to help us foster a vibrant and inclusive campus community. Through various programs, the center explores critical issues about race, class, ethnicity, nationality, culture, and gender.

Housing services

The University of Maine provides on-campus housing in 19 residence halls. Options include traditional undergraduate residence halls for first year and upperclass residents, suite style living for upperclass residents, graduate housing, and several living/learning lifestyle options. All halls remain open for Fall Break and Thanksgiving Break.

Library services

Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine is the largest research library in Maine, with a 150-year history supporting the faculty, students, and staff of the University as well as residents of the State of Maine.The current collection includes approximately 3.6 million print volumes, including government documents, as well as 1.6 million microforms.

Campus life

Located in Orono along the banks of the Stillwater River, this vibrant and dynamic university serves Maine, the nation, and the world through its teaching, research and outreach mission. UMaine students come from every county in Maine, more than 49 other states and 62 countries.

Sports facilities

Athletics are kind of a big deal at the University of Maine.  And by “kind of a big deal,” what we’re really saying is it’s perfectly normal to scream your face off while watching hockey with 5,000 of your closest friends at Alfond Arena.  Our 17 Division I varsity teams draw crowds of Black Bear fans to our games. 

University of Maine is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), the oldest regional accrediting association in the United States. NECHE requires member institutions to demonstrate assessment of student learning by meeting specific standards and submitting a self-study report.
