History

  • On September 28, 1949, Los Angeles-Orange County State College began its first day of classes. One hundred and sixty students were enrolled for the first semester with thirteen full-time faculty.

Research

  • Under the leadership of the Associate Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs, the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (ORSP) at California State University, Long Beach serves the University community by creating a campus environment that is conducive to promoting research and other scholarly activities that contribute to the mission of the University.
  • With a primary emphasis on faculty-student research engagement, the office provides leadership, information, direction, resources, training and technical assistance to faculty and students engaged in externally funded research, instruction, community service and other scholarly activities.

  • There are many on- and off-campus job opportunities for CSULB students.The Career Development Center offers various services to help CSULB students explore careers and prepare for life after The Beach. 
  • It also offers CareerLINK, which provides students with the ability to search and apply for full-time and part-time jobs, internships and on-campus interview opportunities

Student services

  • TRiO Student Support Services Program (SSSP) is a federally-funded program designed to assist students who are low-income, first-generation to college, or have a disability, who also have academic need and the motivation to achieve their maximum potential in higher education.

Medical services

The mission of Student Health Services is to support academic excellence by promoting physical and mental well-being, through affordable quality health services and education. Utilizing a team of dedicated professionals, we provide sensitive, confidential healthcare services to a diverse campus community.

Campus life

  • The student-operated University Student Union is located at the crossroads of the campus, providing a focal point for the total campus community. 
  • Brotman Hall, near the Union, houses many centralized campus services and administrative offices. 
  • There are also specialized facilities for Engineering Technology, Art, Industrial and Interior Design, Music, Molecular and Life Sciences, and Nursing as well as the International House student residence hall and meeting complex.

Sports facilities

  • The Department of Club Sports and Recreation strives to improve the quality of campus life for CSULB students, faculty/staff, and community members by providing a wide range or recreational & competitive clubs, fitness classes, educational programs and open recreation programs. 
  • The Club Sports and Recreation program is funded and maintained through the Division of Student Services.
