History

The University of Limerick was established as a National Institute for Higher Education in 1972 as the state was conscious of the importance of higher education for Irish and international students. 

Initially a member of the National University of Ireland, the Institute eventually decided to strive for individual university status.

Education

  • Four faculties make up the University of Limerick, namely schools of Science and Engineering, Business, Health Science and Humanities.
  • The University of Limerick is known to provide outstanding teaching quality, with highly qualified and experienced faculty offering academic and industry expertise. 
  • The 2019 Times Higher Education rankings placed UL 51st in Europe for its excellent quality of teaching. 
  • The university is known to provide small class sizes, giving all students the individual attention they need to develop. It also features approachable and friendly faculty, whilst there is a focus on industry-relevant projects which contribute to the outstanding employability of students when they graduate.

Research

  • UL’s research and knowledge transfer activities span all of its faculties and disciplines. The University values and supports the excellence of output and achievement by its research community across all of its research areas.
  • In addition, the University has identified a number of areas of research strength, characterised by having critical mass, addressing common research questions, having a significant body of research inputs and outputs, attracting international scholars, and having a national and international reputation.
  • The University of Limerick is recognized to have particular strengths in the areas of Materials, Advanced Manufacturing, Software, Health, and Applied Mathematical Sciences.

Career

  • The University of Limerick is known to provide an education looked upon favourably by employers. The graduate employment rate of UL graduates in 2019 sat at a remarkably high 97% within six months of graduation. These rates are unrivalled in Ireland and show the high regard in which a UL degree is held.

Student services

  • The University of Limerick Postgraduate Student’s Union (ULPSU) was initially formed as the Postgraduate Student’s Association (PSA) in September 2002 and since then has directly represented every postgraduate student that has passed through the doors of UL. 
  • The ULPSU provides a range of supports and services including emergency financial assistance, accommodation resources, and connecting students to UL services such as Learning Centres or the Health Centre. The ULPSU also has a team of full-time Sabbatical Officers to assist UL’s postgraduate community.
  • The ULPSU Sabbatical Officers represent all UL postgraduate students and provide a platform for these students to have their queries and concerns voiced. 

Housing services

  • At University of Limerick Campus Life Services, there are many accommodation options available exclusively for postgraduate students. While the Quigley Residence and Brennan Court are postgraduate specific accommodation, there are also rooms available in all other accommodations for postgraduate students. 
  • UL seeks to prioritise its allocation of campus accommodation for all postgraduate students. A number of rooms have been dedicated to postgraduate students on taught and research programmes which are available on both 9 and 12 month let lengths. 
  • The all-inclusive rental fees for UL accommodation includes a private ensuite bedroom on campus with utilities, high-speed wired internet connection, WiFi.

Library services

  • UL’s Glucksman Library provides full access to high-quality academic information with a collection spanning over 350,000 print and 332,000 digital resources.
  • The spacious building provides seating for 2,200 people, with group study rooms available for student use and designated study areas for silent and quiet work.
  • The library also provides a host of student services including an Information Desk.

ICT services

  • The Glucksman Library has over 150 PCs available for student use, with wireless access throughout the building.
  • There is also WiFi access available across the University of Limerick campus, with several areas available for students to work or relax in-between classes.
  • The University’s Information Technology Division (ITD) also provides support to students with any queries they may have.

Medical services

  • The University of Limerick Student Health Centre is an urgent care/advisory service and deals with all general health issues from students as they present. Services provided include access to a doctor (GP), nurses, blood tests and physiotherapy.

Campus life

  • The University of Limerick won the Best Student Campus award at the 2019 Education Ireland Awards. It is known to provide a picturesque campus which positively impacts student performance in conjunction with state-of-the-art facilities.
  • The University of Limerick is based in a country consistently ranked amongst the top ten safest countries in the world. Ireland is known as a friendly place with minimal levels of crime, with Limerick at the heart of the warm atmosphere which makes the country so loved.
  • UL provides a range of on-campus services including O’Mahoney’s bookshop, AIB Bank, and Spar convenience store.
  • The University is located a short distance away from Limerick City, with bus routes running regularly.

Sports facilities

  • The University of Limerick is known as ‘Ireland’s Sporting Campus’ and has a range of fantastic sports facilities available for students.
  • These include the UL Arena, which houses the national 50M swimming pool, an extensive Health and Performance Centre, an indoor athletics track, a multi-use sports hall and a wide selection of group fitness classes.
  • Across the rest of the UL campus, there are several other sports facilities available for student use. These include an outdoor athletics track, playing fields, tennis courts and AstroTurfs for rugby, football and GAA.
  • The University of Limerick is also used by professional sports organisations, with Swim Ireland running their High Performance programme at UL Arena.

Student clubs

  • The University of Limerick has over 90 clubs and societies, with something to suit everyone’s interests. Some of the clubs and societies available at UL include the Badminton Club, Cheerleading Club, Crafts Society and Film Society.
  • These various clubs and societies run event for their members throughout the semester, and are a great way to have fun, de-stress from studies and make new friends. Joining a club or society at UL is also a great opportunity to try exciting new activities or to compete in the top sporting intercollegiate competitions in Ireland and overseas.
  • The beauty and strength of clubs and societies is that they are run voluntarily by students for other students.
