History

  • Turku is an old university town. Queen Christina of Sweden established the third university of the Sweden-Finland kingdom, the Royal Academy of Turku, in 1640.
  • In the 1820s, three major figures of Finnish language, culture and literature, J.V. Snellman, Elias Lönnrot and J.L. Runeberg, studied at the Royal Academy of Turku.

In accordance with our strategy, we are increasing the number of postdoctoral researchers recruited through international application processes, and we are developing the use of the Tenure Track system further in the whole University.

Distance Learning Courses

Student services

UTU International Office is responsible for the administration and support of incoming and outgoing students and staff.

We are responsible for the mobility agreements and cooperation with our partner universities abroad. The International Office administers and coordinates several international programmes and projects. We administer grants mostly for outgoing students and staff.

Housing services

The housing situation in Turku is relatively good and student appartments are of easy walking, cycling or a bus ride distance from the campus.

It is your responsibility to arrange accommodation for yourself. University of Turku cannot unfortunately guarantee or arrange housing for students and therefore we recommend that you apply housing well in advance, observing the deadlines set by individual housing providers.

Library services

In future, Turku University Library will consist of six libraries with equal status. As recently as 2010, the University Library had 17 libraries on the Turku campus. One of these is the former main library, located on the University Hill, and after the reform it will be renamed as Feeniks Library.

ICT services

You can access the wireless network anywhere on campus. There are two networks: UTU Visitor for Visitors and  Eduroam.

Medical services

All students are recommended to have a valid health insurance during their studies in Turku. Only with proper health insurance can all the costs be covered if you become ill during you stay in Finland.

Campus life

The Turku Campus of the University of Turku is located close to the city centre and the Aura river nearby the other higher education institutions, Turku Science Park companies, and the Turku University Hospital. The campus area extends from Turku Cathedral all the way to the Kupittaa railway station. 

Sports facilities

CampusSport offers sports services for the students and staff of the higher education institutions in Turku. 

Student clubs

The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY, Turun yliopiston ylioppilaskunta) is a public corporation completely independent of the University of Turku. The membership fee of the Union is compulsory to all students.
