History
HAMK’s roots stretch back to 1840, when agricultural education began at the Mustiala Campus. The Evo Campus, meanwhile, is Finland’s oldest school of forestry. It was founded in 1862 and is still operating today, surrounded by its 1800 hectares of observational forest. At the end of the 19th century, Fredrika Wetterhoff founded in Hämeenlinna a handicrafts school which taught weaving and sewing
Education
HAMK offers 29 Bachelor’s degree programmes, 13 Master’s degree programmes and professional teacher education. 14 of the degree programmes are taught in English. HAMK’s seven campuses are situated centrally in the greater Helsinki metropolitan area of southern Finland.
Research
HAMK has four research units:HAMK Bio, HAMK Edu, HAMK Smart and HAMK Tech. These carry out applied research, support teaching and promote regional impact according to their focus areas. Concrete examples of the work in the research units are assignments commissioned by companies and the public sector as well as various research, development and innovation (RDI) projects. Around 130 RDI projects are carried out at HAMK each year, and around one fifth of these are international in scope.
Career
Career guidance and support in career projects is available from guidance counselors, teachers, alumni, recruitment professionals and employers. Keep in mind that people usually talk about their jobs and career paths unreservedly.
Student services
Student services will help you to solve practical issues concerning your studies.
Housing services
Exchange students: if you are a student from one of our partner universities who study or complete internship at HAMK for one to two semesters, some HAMK campuses can arrange a student apartment for you if you notify us about your time of arrival well ahead of time. Please refer to the specific arrangements by campus for more information.
Degree students: if you are a new degree student, we recommend you to start looking for accommodation as early as possible. Student accommodation options are limited, and not all new students can be promised a student apartment. If you are offered a student apartment, we highly recommend you agree to the offer.
Library services
The library supports HAMK learning, teaching, and research, with the collections focusing on HAMK fields of study. The physical collections are located in Hämeenlinna university centre and six campus libraries:
- Hämeenlinna University Centre (Business economics, building construction, ict, design, education, social work, nursing)
- Evo (Forestry)
- Forssa (Sustainable development, nursing)
ICT services
When you join as a student, you will receive a personal user ID, with which you can log in to HAMK computers and many different systems. We are in charge of the IT infrastructure and all of its services, including the functionality of equipment and systems, and we provide training in their use, as well as problem-solving advice.
Medical services
Starting in 2021, students who study for a bachelor’s or a master’s level degree (including international double degree students) at a university of applied sciences will be entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS).
