New York University

History

Founded in 1831 by a farsighted group of prominent New Yorkers, the “University of the City of New-York” (as NYU was originally known) was envisioned from the start as something new: an academic institution metropolitan in character, democratic in spirit, and responsive to the demands of a bustling commercial culture.

Education

NYU’s leadership team is dedicated to fulfilling the University’s educational mission and research enterprise, to advancing a vision for the University’s future, and to sustaining its tradition of academic excellence.

Research

The modern research university has a dual mission: to educate its students, and to discover new knowledge through scholarship. These two missions enhance and inform one another: students at a research university in many instances are taught by the discoverers of the information being discussed in the course, and the classroom's free exchange of ideas can help sharpen research.

The quality of the research enterprise is what truly distinguishes a great university, permitting it to draw in the most talented scholars and the top students. NYU’s faculty are at the forefront of their scholarly disciplines, and their research helps shape the understanding of an enormous range of academic fields.

Campus life

With over 40,000 students, NYU's campus buildings are spread throughout New York City, from midtown Manhattan to the heart of Greenwich Village, and even downtown Brooklyn. One of the United State's most creative and energetic cities, New York City's historic neighborhoods have attracted generations of writers, musicians, artists, and intellectuals.

Beyond the the campus, New York City becomes an extension of the University's campus.  With institutes and centers on the Upper East Side and academic buildings down in the Financial District, getting from place to place at NYU requires a little assistance.

Sports facilities

Students and athletes at NYU can engage in sports and fitness in various ways. NYU Abu Dhabi's full complement of indoor and outdoor fitness facilities ensure that our community of students, staff, and faculty can enjoy competitive and recreational sports year round. NYUAD's competition swimming pool is at the center of our campus, surrounded by many more modern indoor facilities to keep you fit and having fun.

Student clubs

Each year, there are more than 300 active student clubs on campus open to all students — from the Cheese Club to the Joss Whedon Appreciation Society — in addition to school-based clubs, which are exclusive to NYU schools or academic programs.

All-square clubs are listed in NYU OrgSync, which maintains a directory of clubs officially sponsored by the University. OrgSync allows students to connect directly with club leaders online, and helps club leaders manage membership and budgets.

New York University is accredited by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)— one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States.

Our accreditation is subject to review every eight years, when NYU must demonstrate ongoing institutional compliance with MSCHE standards of accreditation. This entails the preparation of a self-study report and a site visit by an evaluation team.

NYU also annually submits data on student success and financial results in the MSCHE annual institutional update. These data are aggregated and reviewed every four years in the mid-point peer review.
