From the initial aspirations of Bishop Hellmuth to the internationally known research of our top scholars today, these leaders of vision, courage and imagination have always looked to the future in shaping Western University.
Founded on March 7, 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth (1817–1901) of the Anglican Diocese of Huron, ‘The Western University of London Ontario’ opened its doors to students for the first time in 1881 with four faculties – Arts, Divinity, Law and Medicine.
In 1916, the current campus was purchased from the Kingsmill family, and in 1923 the university was renamed The University of Western Ontario.

With annual research funding in excess of $240 million, and an international reputation for success, Western ranks as one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities.From fundamental to applied knowledge, Western’s researchers make discoveries that provide tangible benefits for the economic, social, health and cultural development of citizens in London, in Canada and around the world.While the University has achieved acclaim for research in a full complement of disciplines, it has identified signature areas in which global-scale clusters of research excellence have been established, including:

The following centres and services are available to help you determine your next steps to reaching your goals.The Student Success Centre (SSC) offers programs and services designed to help you discover the best that you can be. The SSC offers leadership development and career exploration, skill development, mentoring, community engagement opportunities and social networks; just to name a few. The SSC will help you find your place to be actively engaged in learning inside and outside the classroom.The Student Development Centre (SDC) is home to a variety of services specifically designed to meet the needs of undergraduate and graduate students. Staff members are highly trained and experienced professionals who know what campus life is all about. A dedicated group of student volunteers work with the SDC to provide programs to help you excel at university. Programs include peer-to-peer mentorship, writing support, learning skills services, and more. The Student Entrepreneurship Centre is a new partnership with Fanshawe College that will build bridges with students, researchers, industry and businesses in the city to help student ventures get off the ground.

Student Life

Shopping. Movies. Theatre. Dancing. London always has something going on. Year-round, London has numerous festivals and cultural events, including Snowfest, Sunfest, Rock the Park, London Film Festival and World Beat and Jazz weekends. Considered a sporting hub, London has hosted the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Summer Paralympics and the World Lacrosse Championships. Richmond Row, one of the city’s most interesting shopping districts, features more than 200 businesses catering to your every need. Richmond Row is also home to a lively nightlife scene, including night club entertainment, live theatre and jazz as well as casual and fine dining.
