Wright State University, inspired by the creative spirit of the Wright brothers, will be Ohio’s most learning-centered and innovative university, known and admired for our inclusive culture that respects the unique value of each of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni and for the positive transformative impact we have on the lives of our students and the communities we serve.

History

The campus opened in September 1964 with 3,203 registered students and 55 faculty members. The next year, State Bill 210 passed, allowing the campus to become an independent state university contingent upon enrollment totals. The Ohio General Assembly approved the name Wright State University to honor Dayton’s Wright brothers.

Education

Wright State University is a national public university in Dayton, Ohio with more than 15,000 students. Offering 295 degree programs, the university is made up of eight colleges, three schools, and a branch campus in Celina, Ohio. Named for the Wright brothers, Wright State University offers an exceptional, affordable education.

Student services

The Mission of the University Center for International Education is to act as a catalyst for the comprehensive internationalization of Wright State University. The UCIE facilitates an environment where students, faculty, and staff have increased opportunities to gain international understanding and intercultural competence through learning, engagement, and experience. 

Housing services

  • Hamilton Hall - Hamilton Hall, home to more than 300 students, was the first campus dormitory and hosts the STEM City, a themed community for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
  • Honors Community - 300+ students have the opportunity to live and study together in the Honors Community with special programs in housing that includes themed floors, philanthropic and service projects, honors courses taught on site, and social activities.
  • The Woods - Nine fully furnished co-ed residence halls (Boston, Cedar, Hawthorn, Hickory, Jacob, Laurel, Maple, Oak, and Pine Halls) referred to as The Woods, offers single, double, and triple occupancy with suite-style bathrooms.

Library services

The University Libraries include the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, the Lake Campus Learning Center, the Student Technology Assistance Center (STAC),  and Special Collections and Archives. 

ICT services

Computing and Telecommunications Services (CaTS) provides service and support for all campus technology, including Internet access, computer labs, electronic classrooms, telephones, information technology security, and administrative and computing resources.

Campus life

Wright State University takes pride in its beautiful 557-acre campus, which includes lush forests and a biology preserve. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities include 71 academic and academic support buildings, 33 student residential buildings, and a world-class entertainment and athletics venue. Underground tunnels connect 20 of 22 buildings in the academic section of campus, shielding students and employees from any adverse weather and adding to the university’s national reputation for accessibility for those with disabilities.

Sports facilities

The University Libraries include the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, the Lake Campus Learning Center, the Student Technology Assistance Center (STAC),  and Special Collections and Archives. The Wright Brothers Collection, housed in Special Collections and Archives, includes Wilbur and Orville Wright’s technical and personal library, family papers, and thousands of photographs documenting the invention of the airplane and the family’s history.

Student clubs

Always bustling with activity, the Student Union offers a point of connection for the Wright State community. This 308,000 square foot complex houses meeting rooms, a fitness center, swimming pool, gymnasium, the Union Market dining facility, bookstore, credit union, student organizations, student services and more.

Wright State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). As part of maintaining accreditation, Wright State’s programs and processes are periodically reviewed to ensure institutional quality and integrity.
