History
Created in 1991 by a resolution of the 37th National Assembly held on 21.07.1995 for obtaining a status of higher educational institution, Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" is an educational brand which has earned not only the trust of its students but also that of its numerous academic partners worldwide.
Education
VFU organizes regular, part-time and distance learning for all the education-and-qualification degrees set in the Law on Higher Education such as "Bachelor", "Master" and "Doctor". Being alma mater for more than 30,000 alumni, for over 20 years, one of the first private universities in Bulgaria follows its mission to be a socially responsible subject of the civil society oriented towards students and their careers.
During the training we offer our students an extraordinary opportunity to participate in various academic exchange programs, workshops, internships and training. We believe that the experience gained by participating in our programs is a priceless advantage for our graduates.
Career
The international project “European Business – Guarantee for the Professional Aptitude of the Higher Education Graduates at VFU” was launched at VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” in 2005. There are training practices organized annually for students of various specialties within the project. This is done together with the European Academy for Economics, Banks and Management in the town of Duren, Germany, and the students are placed in companies and institutions in the Province of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Student services
- The university Front Office is a unified centre for administrative service of students and lectrures, educational marketing, enrolment of new students, planning and controlling the educational process, accumulation, storage and analysis of the feedback information.
- The International Projects Office coordinates and oversees the organizational and technical aspects of project participations of VFU.
- Erasmus Office is a structure that organizes and supports the implementation of academic mobility under Erasmus programme
- The Euro-qualification Centre at VFU provides the students with the opportunity to attend training practices in leading European companies and institutions.
Housing services
- Prospective foreign students can receive all necessary information and assistance about accommodation from Office "International Projects" of the university before their arrival.
- Students can stay at the comfortable hotel rooms in the University hostel as well as in "Chaika" campus. Prices for accommodation in the VFU campus are from 11 BGN to 22 BGN (between € 5,60 and € 11,20), depending on the category of the room.
Private Accommodation: Rental prices in the town of Varna and surrounding area vary between 150 and 300 BGN (between 75 € and 150 €) per month.
Library services
The Library is a Varna Free University body performing collection, processing and storage of different types of library documents and databases, and providing access to them.
The Library also uses the following electronic databases: JSTOR, ISI Web of Knowledge, SciVerse Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, BTA World Economy, ResearchGATE.
ICT services
VFU prides itself on a seamlessly functioning Wi-Fi network, enabling unlimited internet access within its campus.
Medical services
There is own medical complex in our university campus. VFU’s university medical complex provides quality healthcare to both students and lecturers. Its diagnostic and balneological sectors have fully equipped doctor’s consulting rooms, a dentist’s surgery, apparatus testing room, a pharmacy, rooms for physiotherapy, water treatment, fitness and remedial exercises, etc.
Campus life
- Lectures are given in auditoriums equipped with modern facilities and in 40 specialized rooms, laboratories and art studios.
- The University has modern language study rooms and an Accounting House.
- Law students have the unique chance to practice their newly acquired knowledge in a training courtroom and the students from the speciality Counteraction to Crime and Public Order Protection can make use of the specialized room in Criminology.
Sports facilities
VFU has sport complex, open to all the students of the University Community which includes:
A multifunctional gym suitable for training and competition games in volleyball, basketball, indoor football - futsal, table tennis, martial arts, etc.
Student clubs
The Student’s Council is an autonomous body, which represents the student’s community of VFU “Chernorizets Hrabar” and defends the interests of those who study at the university. The Student’s Council takes an active part in various projects and collaborates with other student’s organizations.
The Student’s Council:
• organizes the participation of students in cultural, sports, creative, club and international activities;
• provides an opportunity for taking part in VFU’s governing bodies;
• informs students on any upcoming events and developments;
• is a member of the National Representation of the Student’s Councils, in the Association of the Unified European Students (AEGEE), etc.Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” was awarded its third institutional accreditation for the maximum validity period of 6 years, with a mark of 9.12 out of 10. The accreditation document is awarded by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA). This mark is amongst the highest marks ever awarded to a higher education institution in Bulgaria.
The high accreditation mark comes as a result of the university’s effort to continually enhance the quality of education and adapt curricula and student training to the dynamics of the labour market. It is a guarantee for the high quality of the academic product and the strategic development of research.
