History

In 1887, the California Legislature approved the creation of the Northern Branch of the State Normal School. After much debate, Chico was chosen as the site of the new teachers college. The Chico Normal School opened its doors to 90 students in 1889.

In order to maintain integrity in research, the university community accepts the responsibility for investigating, reporting and resolving allegations of misconduct in research which may involve fabrication, falsification or plagiarism in proposing, performing or reviewing research or in reporting research results.

Library services

Meriam Library is the main library for the campus of California State University, Chico, serving 16,000 full-time students, more than 970 instructional faculty, and over 1,000 staff, as well as the communities of Chico and Northeastern California. Meriam Library was named in honor of Ted Meriam and the Meriam Family and is the largest library in California north of Sacramento.

ICT services

Use of the campus wireless network is available, free of charge, to all CSU, Chico students, faculty, and staff. Wireless service is available in all on-campus buildings. Limited outdoor coverage is available in the main plazas surrounding Meriam Library. CSU, Chico is a member of the Eduroam federation, offering free, secure network access when visiting partner universities.

Sports facilities

The Collegiate Sport Clubs Program provides students the opportunity to participate in competitive sports against other intercollegiate teams and represent Chico State, as a means to enhance their collegiate experience and provide a vehicle for a well-rounded education through physical, social, and leadership development.

Student clubs

Most student organizations advertise their meetings and events. Some make presentations to classes, while others publish notices in the Orion and the Chico News and Review calendar sections. The Information Center and the Student Activities Office, both in the BMU, have lists of officers and contact people for those who want to get involved, and your involvement can be at any level, from "may be interested" to becoming an officer.

At the institutional level, CSU, Chico is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
