Monash University

Multiple locations
Monash is a modern, global, research-intensive university, delivering education and research excellence in Australia and across the Indo-Pacific. We’re making a positive impact on today's global challenges – whether that’s by mitigating climate change, easing geopolitical insecurity or fostering healthy communities.

History

Named after engineer, military leader and public administrator Sir John Monash, Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958. When our first students began their studies at our foundation campus in Clayton in 1961, we became the first university established in the state of Victoria in over 100 years.

Education

Education and research is at the heart of what we do – and both are celebrated and recognised for their excellence.  For more than 60 years our future oriented education and research is, and continues to be recognised amongst the best in the world. This is why we are able to address, impact and change the course of the great challenges of our times – locally, nationally and globally.

Research

We have more than 150 active fields of research, 10 faculties, and over 4700 Higher Degree by Research students solving the challenges of our age.

Cardiovascular care, world-class research, and a significant healthcare network and workforce have combined in one place with the official opening of the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH), home to the Monash Victorian Heart Institute (VHI), at Monash University, Clayton, held on Sunday 19 February.

Monash President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC joined Victorian Premier the Hon Daniel Andrews, Minister for Health the Hon Mary-Anne Thomas, and Monash Health Chief Executive Professor Andrew Stripp to celebrate the opening of the 200-bed hospital.

Community means safety, friendship, support and wellbeing. A vital part of preparing yourself for a life of learning, innovation and exploration is the opportunity to meet and learn from one another. This is what living on campus, or in "Res" offers.

For students who live on campus, university life continues beyond the classrooms. Every residence has a long list of activities to help you meet people, stay connected, form study groups and enjoy your time. Friends you make in Res may well become lifelong connections and form part of your social and professional networks well beyond graduation.
