Sophiahemmet University is also a leading higher institution for research and education in the field of health science in Sweden. The University is accredited by the Swedish government to offer a variety of courses and programmes at first cycle (undergraduate level), second cycle (master´s level, one year) and third cycle (doctoral level). 

History

Sophiahemmet University originates from the nursing study programme that was introduced in 1884 by the Swedish Queen Sophia. The Queen aimed to improve the quality of Swedish health care by introducing a programme that contained both theoretical education and clinical training.

Education

The University has in total, approximately 1 500 students on a yearly basis. Approximately 450 of these students study the three-year Bachelor`s programme in nursing science (180 higher education credits).

This programme is one of the most popular nursing science programmes offered in Sweden with a large number of applicants each year (approximately 5000 applicants from all over Sweden).

The University also offers a variety of educational programmes at advanced level, such as Specialist Nursing programmes, as well as Bachelor, Master and Diploma programmes. These programmes are given in Swedish. High quality research within nursing science and medical science is also carried out at the University.

Housing services

Guest students are, depending on availability of rooms, offered accommodation at Lappkärrsberget, near the Stockholm University campus, just outside the city centre. These are single rooms with a small bathroom. In every hall there is a joint kitchen. The rooms are simply furnished with a bed, bedside table, desk with chair, cupboard and a shelf. Bring your own bed linen and towels

Library services

The library’s main purpose is to provide students, teachers and researchers at the University with literature. It holds some 20 000 book volumes, in both Swedish and English, and a large number of journals with emphasis on nursing and research methodology. The library provides access to various databases and offers interlibrary loan service to its customers.

Medical services

Sophiahemmet University has an agreement with the Student Health Center at Karolinska Institute. The Student Health Center will do the necessary MRSA test. The centre is staffed with doctors, nurses and counsellors and provide support and advice regarding your mental and physical health during your studies. There are also various group activities and counselling. All services are free of charge.

Campus life

The University is located in the centre of Stockholm in beautiful park surroundings with Sophiahemmet, Queen Sophia Hospital (private hospital) on one side and the Royal Institute of Technology on the other. Other neighbouring colleges are the Royal College of Music and the University College of Physical Education and Sports.
