History

In 1974,the University of Houston acquired the assets of South Texas Junior College and opened the University of Houston-Downtown College at One Main Street as a four-year institution.By 2007,fall enrollment climbed to a record 11,793 students and the Shea Street Building opened to greet returning students as the new home of the College of Business.Today,UHD educates over 14,400 students annually.

Education

The University of Houston-Downtown is a comprehensive four-year university offering bachelor's and selected master's degree programs and providing strong academic and career preparation as well as life-long learning opportunities. Located in the heart of the city, the University reflects the diversity of the Greater Houston Area, and through its academic programs, engages with the community to address the needs and advance the development of the region. UHD is an inclusive community dedicated to integrating teaching, service and scholarly research to develop students' talents and prepare them for success in a dynamic global society.

Research

UHD has a number of available resources to support sponsored programs and research activities.

The Office of Sponsored Programs provides a central location for sponsored project activities. This centralized function is designed to protect the integrity of UHD research. The office provides support to the faculty by facilitating the improvement and development of the sponsored programs climate at UHD.

The Talent Acquisition Department at UHD is dedicated to the recruitment and retention of qualified individuals. Whether you are a first-year student or graduate student, Student Housing & Residential Life provides an experience that is focused on student success. We are here to serve you and to support the mission of the University.

Library services

Study rooms are available for groups of 3-10 people. Some are open 24/7 and available without reservations including days and hours when the library is closed (on those days enter the building through the UHD Police Department entrance on Girard Street). 

ICT services

Students, gear up for success at UHD! The Information Technology team is here to provide you with a robust, secure technology infrastructure, as well as support services to meet your needs.

Medical services

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides travel notices and articles about travel-health related topics aimed at world travelers to help them prepare to manage illness and injury abroad. 

Sports facilities

University of Houston-Downtown Sports & Fitness serves as a vital and integral part of student life on campus. The mission of Sports & Fitness is to provide the university community with programs that offer vigorous, fun-filled, health-promoting, physical activity conducive to wellness and personal development. Sports & Fitness supports the mission of UHD by seeking to create a climate that motivates members to embrace a healthy life-style, which can enhance their academic studies, build friendships and social skills, develop leadership qualities, and cultivate a sense of ownership and belonging to the university. UHD students are second to none and deserve a first rate program. 

Student clubs

Student Activities provides various opportunities for students to get involved. Here you can; join a student organization to interact with other students, faculty, and staff members with similar interest and stay connected. You can also create an organization if we not have any to match your interest. With over 70 student organizations, the possibilities are endless. 

 The University of Houston-Downtown is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and masters degrees and certificate programs.
