History

The history of the University of South Carolina Upstate is a chronicle of remarkable development. In 1967, the university was founded in response to efforts undertaken by G.B. Hodge, M.D., together with fellow members of the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education, and a remarkably strong founding faculty primarily to avert a serious health care labor shortage crisis.

Education

  • We have more than 40 undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business administration, nursing, and education, as well as 17 NCAA Division I sports teams.
  • Bachelor's degree programs in liberal arts, sciences, business administration, nursing and teacher education. Master's degree programs in education, nursing and informatics.

Research

  • The Research Symposium provides an opportunity for both faculty and students from primarily undergraduate institutions throughout the Upstate of South Carolina to discuss and share information regarding their research, scholarly and/or creative endeavors. 

  • Research is conducted at USC Upstate in diverse areas of study. The Office of Sponsored Awards and Research Support (SARS) serves as a point of contact for faculty, staff and students who are seeking assistance with their research and scholarly endeavors on campus.

  • The Student Success Center strives to help students succeed in their studies, graduate from USC Upstate in a timely manner, and begin a career or graduate study.

Student services

The Office of Student Involvement is a central hub for extra-curricular and co-curricular involvement for the campus. We oversee such programs and initiatives as Student Organizations, Leadership Programs, Campus Programs/Activities, Multicultural Programs, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and Volunteer Services. Our Office strives to provide three outcomes that center around students’ sense of belonging, experiences that support intrapersonal identity development and experiences that support a student’s interpersonal and professional skill development.

Housing services

  • Magnolia House is a housing facility exclusively for freshmen students. This 105,000-square-foot, suite-style complex can house up to 352 students in its 87 suites, which include single or double rooms and handicap-accessible units.
  • Palmetto House is a 105,000-square-foot suite-style complex can house up to 346 students in its 87 suites, including single or double rooms and handicap-accessible units.
  • The Villas offer more traditional-style apartments for upperclassmen. Each apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, expanded cable outlets in each bedroom and living room, a full kitchen.

Library services

With more than 60,000 square feet, the USC Upstate Library has more than 240,000 print volumes that can be requested for pick-up as well as online e-books for 24/7 use. The library has 342 online databases with articles that can be accessed 24/7 for any subject research need.

Medical services

Health Services offers health care and education to all enrolled students on an outpatient basis. Our team of nurse practitioners and nurses are available to provide a variety of services including, but not limited to immunizations, tuberculin skin tests, physicals/wellness visits, and sick visits.

Located in Spartanburg County, near the crossroads of interstates 85 and 26, USC Upstate is positioned at the center of an international business hub between Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C.
