History

The university was named the State College for Alameda County when it was officially established by the California State Assembly in 1957. The first academic year began in 1959 at Sunset High School in Cherryland with 25 faculty and 293 students. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the current Hayward Campus were held in February 1961 and the college moved to its permanent location in Fall 1963.

SHRL works to sustain this mission by providing student-centered programs, services, and facilities that foster a safe, inclusive and vibrant residential learning community.

The CSUEB Libraries promote student and faculty success by providing comprehensive and convenient access to the scholarly record. The Libraries teach students how to become information literate citizens who will continue to learn throughout their lives.

Campus life

Cal State East Bay's three locations in the heart of California's beautiful San Francisco East Bay Area offer a wide range of degree and career path options. Classes at our Hayward Campus, our Concord Campus and our Oakland Professional Development & Conference Center provide you with an exceptional opportunity to achieve your educational goals. All locations are accessible by major freeways and public transportation systems, including the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. Campus shuttles run to and from the Hayward and Castro Valley BART stations, as well.

Sports facilities

Operated by Recreation and Wellness Services, the Recreation and Wellness Center (RAW) is designed and built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Standards and maintains green and sustainable practices. The RAW boasts 54,000 square feet of fitness, recreation, education, and administrative space complete with state-of-the-art equipment. The RAW also hosts the Wellness Center, a health education resource for students.

Student clubs

Cal State East Bay has many opportunities for you to meet people and be part of campus life. Choose from more than 90 academic athletic, Greek, honor, religious, recreational, student government, and cultural clubs and organizations. Student government, service to the community and leadership groups provide ways for you to get involved and make a difference.

Cal State East Bay is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, commonly referred to as WASC. Our next reaffirmation of accreditation visit will be held in Spring of 2025.
