About

History

The University of South Bohemia was established in 1991, but it built on the foundations of the pre-existing traditions of educating teachers, experts in agricultural production as well as theological studies and the tradition of fisheries.

The core of the University was formed by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Agronomy (both were active prior to 1991 as different institutions).

The University's focus on research has also been confirmed by the comparative rankings of universities. One example for all, the 4ICU Czech University Ranking of colleges and universities in more than 200 countries, ranks the University of South Bohemia in the 1 431st place.

The University's research is of top quality as evidenced by major publications and scientists from the University of South Bohemia publish the results of their work in the most prestigious scientific journals such as Nature, Science and PNAS. They have also received much international recognition and many awards. On 22 July 2019 USB received the HR AWARD certification.

Housing services

Over 2,000 beds across six dormitories. Quality accommodation at a student-friendly price.

The accommodation capacity at USB consists of four buildings (K1 to K4) located directly in the university campus. The K5 dormitory, located about 15 minutes walk away from the main USB campus, is on the left bank of the Vltava River on the outskirts of the Vltava housing estate and the K6 dormitory is in the USB sports complex. The total capacity of the dormitories is 2,300 beds used to full capacity by university students throughout the academic year.

Library services

The library collection of USB is stored in two floors of a modern library building that provides more than 450 000 books and journals, tens of thousands of e-books, more than 500 study places in various study rooms, 100 PCs with internet access, Wi-Fi connection, self-returning of books 24 hours a day, copying, printing and scanning services, a cafe and a bookshop of Academia publishing. 

ICT services

All University students receive a user account which will give them access to the wireless network. Each international student is given a university ID card. This card gives the access to the university buildings and allows to use services at the university (canteen, printing and copying, library). Students get discounts for transport, restaurants, cinemas, museums, exhibitions and concerts.

Medical services

Your health insurance entitles you to visit any general practitioner or a dentist. If you have eye problems or any other specific problem, you should first visit a general practitioner, who will examine you and then, if necessary, arrange for you to see a specialist.

Unless it is urgent, we recommend calling in advance to make an appointment. Do not forget to take your insurance card, insurance number or any document proving that you have insurance.

Sports facilities

The University of South Bohemia (Faculty of Education) provides its students a wide range of sports activities. Foreign students can attend various sports courses.

Apart from the traditional sports such as tennis, volleyball, basketball and swimming you can choose from courses such as climbing, spinning, yoga, martial arts, sqash or scuba diving.
