History
In 1886, founding president David Bancroft Johnson successfully petitioned Boston philanthropist Robert C. Winthrop and the Peabody Fund for seed money to form a training school for teachers.The school soon received state assistance and moved to its permanent Rock Hill home in 1895. It expanded its mission over time Winthrop assumed university designation in 1992.

Research
The Winthrop University Undergraduate Research Initiative (WUURI) supports a student-centered learning environment that fosters student research, scholarship, and creative activities. The initiative encourages students and faculty mentors to collaborate in the design and implementation of projects and the dissemination of results.

Student services
The Office of Student Services provides academic support to students, faculty, and staff in an effort to ensure academic success for students in the College. We are available to answer questions related to academic programs, including but not limited to academic policies, degree requirements, and transfer of credit. We are committed to helping students find the major that develops their potential and leads toward a fulfilling career. It is also our goal to help students complete their major requirements in a time-efficient manner.
Housing services
As you will discover, Winthrop's residence life program has real advantages - it is designed with benefits that make living well and learning easier during your time here. By living on campus, students have unique opportunities to establish lifelong friendships, to participate in exciting activities and to truly feel connected to the university. The added convenience of living close to classes, dining and support services, make on-campus living at Winthrop the ideal environment to live, learn and lead.
Library services
Winthrop faculty members may check out general collection materials for a period of one academic year. Though faculty do not incur daily overdue fines, materials 50 or more days overdue will be declared lost, and the borrower's university account will be charged the cost of replacement plus a ten dollar processing fee. Faculty may not renew materials online.

The mission for Computing and Information Technology is to provide the appropriate technological infrastructure to support teaching, research and service, and to provide high-quality, efficient, and effective technological support service to all academic and administrative functions at Winthrop University.
Medical services
Winthrop University Health Services is designed to provide confidential, professional, quality, cost-effective, acute, and routine medical care for all enrolled Winthrop University students. The staff of Health Services is committed in obtaining optimum personal health for each student through services and programs provided.
Campus life
Winthrop University's scenic central campus is one of Rock Hill's five historic districts, with several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The distinctive architecture, coupled with an abundance of colorful foliage, towering shade trees, and well-manicured lawns, attracts numerous visitors each year. The recreational east and growing west campuses are impressive in their own right and reflect the institution's student-centered purpose. Sports facilities
Winthrop University is committed to offering every student the resources and opportunities needed to enjoy sports and exercise at any level they choose. Participating in Sport Programs helps students learn new sports, develop new athletic skills and improve their talent within an enjoyable, inclusive environment. The rules and regulations for both Intramural Sports and Club Sports require good sportsmanship and appropriate behavior, which promotes a fair and safe atmosphere for everyone.
