History

Founded in 1867, Northeastern Illinois University has a rich tradition of educational innovation and prides itself on preparing teachers and administrators who make a difference in Chicago. That tradition continues to this day and has expanded to include an array of academic disciplines, allowing the University to embrace fully the community in which it resides.

Education

Northeastern offers over 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, plus a wide range of certificate programs to choose from.

Research

NEIU has a rich breadth of research, scholarship, and creative activities that are the result of the engaged efforts of a wide array of faculty, staff, administrators, and students. The various research offices at NEIU and the Research and Creative Activities Advisory Group, whose members serve as liaisons to the broader Northeastern community, are here to support those activities.

Career Development empowers the Northeastern Illinois University community by providing excellent opportunities for career exploration.

We offer many resources and services to Northeastern students and alumni, including:

Housing services

Living in university housing is a great way to support students’ academic success, and national studies show students who have a student housing experience have a better overall college experience and make more lasting connections and friendships.

Student housing is important to Northeastern's efforts to recruit and retain local, national and international students.

Library services

The Ronald Williams Library serves the students, faculty and staff of Northeastern Illinois University at four locations:

  • Main Library
  • CCICS Library
  • El Centro Library and Learning Resource Center
  • University Center of Lake Country

ICT services

Our technologies support learning, research, teaching and administration. This IT environment provides the latest in technology for administrative and academic computing, local and wide area networking, telephony, help desk, client computer literacy and training, and media and web services for our students, faculty and staff.

Medical services

Nurses can provide assessment, treatment and follow-up for a wide range of complaints and problems. Use us as your first line of care; we may refer you to your physician if the situation cannot be fully dealt with in the Student Health Services office. Our advanced practice nurse provides well-woman gynecological care as well as STD testing.

Campus life

The Main Campus is located on 67 acres in a quiet, residential community area of North Park, just 10 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. On the Main Campus you will find the Physical Education Complex, Ronald Williams Library, Bernard J. Brommel Hall, Lech Walesa Hall and the campus bookstore. The Offices of Enrollment Services, which includes Admissions, Financial Aid, Scholarships and Registration, are housed on the Main Campus.

Student clubs

Northeastern Illinois University currently has over 70 chartered student organizations. These organizations range in interest and activity, from cultural to academic or pre-professional, media, Greek-letter, and many more. The Office of Student Leadership Development is responsible for training, the continued program planning and success of these student organizations. If you are interested in club sports or intramural clubs, contact the Campus Recreation Office where those particular clubs are chartered and housed. 

Northeastern Illinois University has regional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges.
