History
Norfolk State College was founded in 1935. The College, brought to life in the midst of the Great Depression, provided a setting in which the youth of the region could give expression to their hopes and aspirations.
Education
All NSU degree programs have been approved by SCHEV and are published on SCHEV's degree inventory website. The University has five academic colleges/schools and 49 degree programs that operate on one campus. The University also offers online programs through NSU Online, an honors degree through the Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College and certificate programs through the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center.

Student services
The administrative offices help the University carry out its mission efficiently and effectively. The University is organized into four divisions: Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs, Finance and Administration, Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and University Advancement.
Housing services
Housing and Residence Life is responsible for the overall management of a comprehensive student housing program. Through intentional experiences and services, we offer students a safe, inclusive and well-maintained learning centered residential environment that promotes a sense of belonging, self-authorship, student empowerment, intellectual curiosity, and transformational development.
Library services
It is the mission of the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library to serve the research needs of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community. We enable our patrons to cultivate ideas and create knowledge. Patrons have access to a variety of collections, expertise, services, and equipment to transform information into knowledge thus developing lifelong learners..
Medical services
The Spartan Health Center, located in Spartan Station, provides basic health services for NSU students, including diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, emergency medical care, and health education counseling.

The Norfolk State University Spartan Training Zone is designed to invoke a Spartan healthy lifestyle. Equipped with state of the art equipment, the training zone is the Ideal place to GET FIT! The Spartan Training Zone stands to educate the NSU community and strive to help students, faculty and staff reach their fitness/wellness goals with the best equipment and programs.
