Southern Arkansas University

History

Southern Arkansas University (SAU), a comprehensive regional public university, was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School (TDAS). The school was later elevated to a junior college, Magnolia A&M, in 1925, and a four-year college, Southern State College, in 1951.

Education

Established in 1909, SAU has built on its dedication to student achievement and continues to grow, both on campus and online, with more than 80 degrees in four distinct colleges and the School of Graduate Studies.

Research

The purpose of the Office of Institutional Research at Southern Arkansas University is to create decision support that helps SAU fulfill its mission to educate students for productive and fulfilling lives, as well as provide accurate statistical information for dissemination to the public while maintaining the highest professional standards of accuracy, objectivity, and timeliness.

Career

Career Services is responsible for student worker training, maintaining a file of student worker data sheets, posting on-campus and part-time off-campus employment opportunities, and posting full-time employment opportunities.

Students wanting to work on campus should complete a student worker data sheet to provide current contact information and work hours available.  They are also encouraged to contact departments where they are interested in working.

Student services

SSS is a federally funded program designed to increase the retention and graduation rates and foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low-income and first generation college students and students with disabilities.

Housing services

Columbia Hall is a freshman-only residence hall for students enrolled in the Residential College Living Learning Community. Columbia Hall opened in August 2016 and has kitchenettes on every floor with lush common areas, along with hybrid-style bathrooms that give extra privacy to our residents. To join the Residential College and live in Columbia Hall, students must have a minimum of 22 on ACT or a 3.25 high school GPA or higher. Columbia Hall is located on the North side of campus across from Wilkins Stadium and the Mulerider Track.

Library services

Magale Library’s reference and instructional librarians aspire to train students to use library resources to their fullest. Through personal attention and professional training, students learn to conduct research themselves, solve problems, and become lifelong learners.

Medical services

The UHS primary goal is to aid in the retention of students by offering a variety of services to meet the mental, emotional, and physical needs of the SAU student body. We provide health promotion and disease prevention services for students, faculty, and staff.

Campus life

The beautiful Southern Arkansas University campus rests on 1,491 acres along the northern edge of Magnolia, Arkansas.
