History
Black Hills State University has enjoyed a long and successful history of educating the citizens of South Dakota and the west river region. Before South Dakota had even gained statehood, the people of Black Hills Dakota Territory demonstrated a high regard for education and began advocating for a university in the Black Hills. Dakota Territorial Normal School was founded in 1883.

Research
Students have so many opportunities for research - from research conducted at one of the only underground campuses in the world to an herbarium with over 50,000 species of plants. With the endless opportunities, students have the world at their fingertips.
Career
There are three types of student employment: federal work-study, institutional work-study, and off-campus employment. A student must meet certain eligibility requirements to work in either a federal work-study or an institutional work-study program.

Student services
The Registrar's Office is responsible for student registration, enrollment verification, academic records maintenance, transfer credit evaluation, academic catalogs, awarding degrees, WebAdvisor assistance, withdrawals, and transcript services.
Housing services
Five residence halls and the Yellow Jacket Apartments provide housing for students. All of our residence halls are co-ed. Our halls are Bordeaux, Heidepriem, Thomas, Humbert, and Wenona Cook.
Library services
The E.Y. Berry Library was built in 1973 and is nearly 50 years old. Education has changed significantly since the construction of the library. The structure is in need of an upgrade to keep up with the demands of current education methods and the future of learning.
ICT services
Our mission is to be a leader in promoting and enabling technology to enhance the learning environment. IITS works collaboratively with faculty, students, and staff to leverage technology to advance and support BHSU’s delivery of education, development of research, and engagement of students.
Medical services
BHSU and Student Health Services are committed to high quality health care for our students at the most reasonable cost possible. We are dependent upon student participation. We are determined to increase the level of health awareness, identify needs that have not been met, and setting health care priorities for our students.
Campus life
Five residence halls and an eight building apartment complex - all with spectacular views of the Northern Black Hills. The new Bordeaux Hall, which connects Heide and Thomas Halls creates an active campus housing complex.
Sports facilities
The Donald E. Young Center at BHSU offers more than exceptional fitness facilities. Along with the largest collection of exercise equipment in the region, a field house with a walking track, and an Aquatic Center with lap lanes, the Young Center provides personal exercise prescriptions with a certified trainer and classes taught by wellness students. Built in 1990, the Young Center continues to be the hub of the Black Hills State University Campus. The only building of its kind in the immediate region, it is designed to serve the needs of the university and the greater Black Hills community.
