History

Established in 1850 and with a deep heritage in education, St Mary’s has a strong reputation for teaching excellence and a student-centred approach.

On 23rd January 2014, St Mary's University College, Twickenham, was awarded full university title by the Privy Council and became St Mary's University, Twickenham.

Student services

St Mary's Students Union (SMSU)

  • St Mary’s Students’ Union is the main representative body of all students at St Mary’s University. 
  • We offer advice and guidance to students on an individual basis and represent students at university, locally and nationally. SMSU also coordinates all sports clubs and societies on campus and provides all major events and entertainments throughout the year.
  • Each year, SMSU holds elections for the new  leaders of the organisation: the SU President, Vice-President Community and Welfare and Vice-President Activities, as well as the Student Leadership Team (part time officers). Candidates must be students at the time of the SMSU Elections, which happen in February or March each year.

Housing services

All of our halls are within easy reach of the University and centred around the popular student areas of  Kingston and  Twickenham, where you can live, work and socialise. Situated along the River Thames, the towns provide fantastic shopping facilities in a selection of high street and independent stores, plus an array of restaurants, bars, cafés and a vibrant nightlife.

We offer a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and lifestyles including catered or self-catered, single rooms or shared rooms, and we are confident you will find somewhere that suits you.

Library services

  • The Main Campus Library, comprehensive study facility located at the heart of the campus containing 300 study spaces and providing access to over 120,000 books, nearly 4,500 e-books and more than 41,000 e-journals
  • The Naylor Library, newly refurbished building with approximately 270 study places to suit different working styles

Medical services

The St Mary's Health Centre is a branch surgery of  The York Medical Practice in Twickenham and offers a nurse-led health service.  A Nurse Practitioner is available every week day during term-time and have arrangements to book Doctors’ appointments at The York Medical Practice in Twickenham if necessary. 

Campus life

The University's current estate is in four parts. The main campus is on Waldegrave Road in Twickenham within the grounds of Strawberry Hill House, a hall of residence is located at 16 Strawberry Hill Road, the main sports fields are located on the Teddington Lock campus in Broom Road, Teddington, and the new Naylor Library (also on Waldegrave Road) which opened in the autumn of 2015.
