About

History

From its modest beginnings as a small normal school for the training of black teachers for the black schools of Kentucky, Kentucky State University has grown and evolved into a land-grant and liberal arts institution that prepares a diverse student population to compete in a multifaceted, ever-changing global society. The University was chartered in May 1886.

Services

Student services

The Office of Student Life plans and promotes extracurricular activities that reflect the academic efforts of the university, and serves as an enhancement of the overall educational experience of students through social, cultural, intellectual, instructional, leadership, spiritual, recreational and governance programs.

Housing services

The University provides housing for students who wish to live on campus. Most full-time undergraduate students live in the University’s residence halls.  All full-time freshmen and sophomore students, except veterans of at least two years’ active military service, students who commute from their parents’ or legal guardians’ homes, married students, or students 21 years of age or older, are required to live in campus housing.  

Residence halls vary in size and architectural style, and they provide double-room accommodations in most instances. A limited number of single rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Library services

Paul G. Blazer Library, located at the northeast end of the campus, provides comprehensive and current research materials and facilities for students and faculty.  The university community is also encouraged to use Blazer Library for personal enrichment and leisure reading.  Blazer Library’s collection of more than 700,000 volumes.

ICT services

  • The first point of contact for placing technical requests to IT, including questions.
  • Provides first level support for all areas of service in IT for university students, faculty, and staff.

    • Lync/SharePoint/OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive)
    • MS Office Suite

Medical services

Kentucky State University’s Student Health Services provides quality, free-of-charge healthcare to students. In order to support the holistic development of a healthy lifestyle for students, we focus on all aspects of care—physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. 

 Services are available during the regular academic year and summer sessions.

Student Life

Campus life

The campus map lists the University’s buildings and facilities at the main campus and shows their respective locations.  The University’s 882-acre campus includes more than 50 buildings. This includes a 204-acre agricultural research farm and a 306-acre environmental education center. The campus sits in the heart of Frankfort, just four miles from Interstate 64, at 400 E. Main Street.

Sports facilities

The William Exum Center, erected in 1994, serves as the home for the Kentucky State University men's and women's basketball teams. In addition to the competitive arena, which has a capacity of 2750, the Exum Center holds offices for the athletics administrative staff and basketball staffs.The facility features two additional recreation courts, a competition swimming pool, racquetball courts, an athletic training facility, and the academic study hall. 

Student clubs

The Social Work program offers acceptance into the Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society. The purpose of Phi Alpha is to strengthen the bond among students of social work and to promote humanitarian goals and ideals. The honor society invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. There is a one-time membership fee of $20.

Accreditation

Kentucky State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s and the doctor of nursing practice degree.
