History

Holy Names University (HNU) was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1868 on the shores of Lake Merritt. In 1957, the campus was moved from Lake Merritt to a wooded, sixty-acre site in the Oakland Hills.

Housing services

It’s so much more than a dorm room. It’s sharing a coffee at Rosie’s Cafe and chatting over lunch at the Public Market. It’s attending residence events that help you develop deep bonds with your neighbors. It’s forming friendships you will have for life. It’s a living and learning environment you’ll love calling your home.

Library services

The Library is open to current HNU students, faculty, and staff for individual seat reservations. Group study is not available at this time. Items can also be requested for door-side pickup.

Campus life

Nestled among the hills, the campus provides a safe haven and an extremely beautiful study atmosphere. Convenient day-long or weekend trips may be made to Yosemite National Park, the Sierra Gold Country, Lake Tahoe, Monterey Bay and Carmel, and to the Napa Valley and Sonoma County wineries. Parkssurrounding the campus offer numerous opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, or bicycling.

Sports facilities

Tobin Gym, located on the Holy Names University campus, is the home for HNU Volleyball and Basketball. The facility includes seating for three hundred spectators, a fitness center, team rooms athletic training room, swimming pool, and locker rooms 

Student clubs

Black Student Union, Freaks and Geeks, Peace and Justice Club, Latinos Unidos.
