History

The Northern State University Foundation (NSUF) was established in 1969 as a non-profit, self-supporting organization established solely for the benefit of Northern State University and its students.

Education

Research

Undergraduate research is a critical component of Northern’s DNA. Every day, student researchers in the College of Arts and Sciences and schools of Business, Education and Fine Arts are pushing the boundaries of knowledge and insight. Research opportunities abound at Northern, as well as important programs that reward and encourage research and scholarly activities. 

The Undergraduate Research Program provides an undergraduate research forum, travel grants, and research grants each year. 

The mission of Northern's Office of Institutional Research is to meet the information needs of the decision- and policy makers of the institution as they work to fulfill students' educational and social needs.

Career

The NSU Career Services Center's goal is to help students transition to professionals.The center can help students match their interests, skills, and values with majors, career options, and employment opportunities that fit their professional and personal goals. The center also helps students prepare for internships or graduate school. Employment opportunities abound on WolfWork, an online jobs database available to current NSU students and alumni.

Student services

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) administers the Northern State University Student Code of Conduct and provides outreach to the campus community on safety, security, and other issues important for student success.

Library services

Williams Library is committed to providing user-centered service, collections, and facilities in support of teaching, learning, and research across the community.

ICT services

The Tech Center, located in the center of campus as a northern addition to the Mewaldt-Jensen Building, is home to technology support for Northern and features three computer labs, two smart classrooms, a fully equipped TV studio and a media center, offices for Technology Services staff and Arts and Sciences faculty, and provides free technical assistance to faculty, staff and students.

Medical services

NSU Health Services is an on-campus office, staffed with a certified medical assistant or a patient services representative and a physician assistant (PA). Services include:

  • Assessment and treatment of acute or sudden onset of illness or injury lab testing (urine screening, strep throat, blood count and mono screening).
  • Over-the-counter medications for common colds, sore throat, cough and headaches

Campus life

At Northern, you can explore numerous art galleries, relax in front of a Student Center fireplace, study in the library, work out in the Barnett Center or even feed the squirrels on the campus green. No matter where you go, you'll always feel at home.

You'll also feel safe on our well-lit, secure campus located in a welcoming community. Rated the No. 2 best small college town in America by USA Today College, Aberdeen is friendly city with a lot to offer Northern students in terms of food, fun, entertainment and culture.

We take pride in our campus, and we also invest in its future. Look around and you'll see numerous improvement projects taking shape, from new residence halls to a new science center. 

Sports facilities

Exercise is good for the body and the mind. Northern students, faculty and staff can get their exercise at the Student Recreation Center in Dacotah Hall. 

A variety of wellness classes are available, in which all students may participate free of charge.

The center also is home to NSU's intramural activities.

The center was established in 2006 and is funded entirely by student activity fees. The more than 3,500-square-foot facility includes a gymnasium, dance studio and aerobic room.

Student clubs

The NSU Accounting Club enhances the learning process of accounting majors through guest speakers, volunteer income assistance and tours of accounting-related businesses. Accounting Club provides tutoring for accounting classes in cooperation with the University College, encourages improvement in scholarship, provides accounting and money management in the community and also provides members with information in preparation for the CPA exam. Accounting Club is open to students with an interest in accounting and accounting-related fields. Dues are collected annually.
