About

History

UAS was established on July 1, 1987 with the restructuring and consolidation of the former University of Alaska Juneau, Ketchikan Community College, and Islands Community College (Sitka).

Education

UAS offers both online and on-campus programs in the sciences, including marine biology, English, social science, liberal arts, business, education, construction, power technology, fisheries, maritime training, health sciences, and more.

Research

Although we are a small university, we seek to contribute in big ways to the understanding of the unique biocultural region we inhabit, including its premier coastal rainforest, majestic icefields, and glaciers, and rich marine ecosystems.

You will find in our links to projects and publications studies on the Tongass National Forest, the Juneau Icefield, and the coastal waters of Southeast Alaska.

Much of our environmental research is coordinated through the pioneering Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center, as well as our highly-respected Environmental Science, Marine Biology, and Fisheries programs.

Career

The Juneau campus Career Services Office is located in the lower level of the Mourant Building. Our Career Services Coordinator assists students at all three of our campuses with career exploration, resume development, cover letter composition, interviewing skills, and ‘how to conduct an effective job search.’

Services

Student Life

Campus life

The UAS Juneau campus makes the most of a spectacular environment along the Tongass National Forest and the Juneau Icefield. You can study environmental science at the only university in the United States next to glacial watersheds, marine biology in a prime habitat for marine mammals, and art or English literature in the footsteps of John Muir.

Students also write plans for local businesses, take the stage with Alaska’s regional theater company, or work as interns in the state legislature in Juneau, Alaska’s capital city.

Sports facilities

The Rec Center is the hub of action and entertainment on the Juneau campus-with a multipurpose gym, large classrooms, a two story climbing wall, cardio machines, weight room, indoor running track, fitness studio, outdoor gear rental, and a venue for live shows, dances and movies.

Student clubs

Student organizations are an essential part of campus life at the University of Alaska Southeast. Involvement in student organizations can enrich your experience as a UAS student and offer you the chance to develop leadership skills as well as strengthen your relationships with fellow students, your campus, and the Juneau community.
