Catholic Theological Union

Engage in a transforming, intercultural, academic experience at one of America’s leading Roman Catholic schools of theology and ministry.

History

In 1964, Cardinal Leo Suenens of Belgium spoke at the University of Chicago and urged that seminaries of the future might be urban based, in the context of a great academic center, and ecumenical in spirit. That speech inspired the founding of CTU in 1968, when several religious orders combined their seminary resources, moved to Chicago’s Hyde Park, and began a daring experiment in collaboration.

Education

Impelled by the good news of Jesus Christ, CTU, with its intercultural, ecumenical, and interfaith partners, will be a transformative force in the Church and world for affirming human dignity and the sacredness of God's creation.

Housing services

Catholic Theological Union currently has guest rooms available for people attending events or visiting CTU. The guest rooms are located in our Residence Hall and Student Center located at 5401 S. Cornell Avenue, just across the street from CTU’s Academic and Conference Center.

Library services

The Paul Bechtold Library contains 150,000 volumes and receives 500 periodicals, providing resources for study and research by students and faculty members. The library’s holdings include the Weber-Killgallon collection in religious education, and the library collection is particularly strong in materials related to religious orders, religious life, and Franciscan Studies.

Catholic Theological Union has a rich tradition of academic excellence and of preparing men and women for a life of ministry and service. CTU degrees are fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS).
