Moscow Campus - Faculty of Computer Science

The Faculty of Computer Science trains developers and researchers. The computer sciences (informatics, applied mathematics, and programming) are developing rapidly, and education in this area cannot always keep up with the changes and the real needs of the IT industry.

History

The Faculty of Computer Science was created in March 2014 with the goal of becoming one of the world’s top 30 faculties in training developers and researchers in the field of big data storage and processing, system and software engineering and system programming.

Education

The wide range of elective courses will allow each student to create his or her own educational path. In the faculty, learning is based on practice and projects.

Faculty alumni are expected to obtain a number of competencies that can be summed up as follows:

  • Coding skills, i.e., the ability to develop an elaborate software product both individually and as part of a team;
  • Knowledge of the branches of mathematics that are fundamental for computer science and ability to handle mathematical concepts;
  • Mastery of a specific area of expertise and ability to solve tasks within a specific application domain;
  • Fluency in English that is necessary for professional work in an English-speaking environment.

Research

The Faculty aims at preparing highly qualified data scientists, software engineers, and computer science researchers for leading Russian and international IT companies and academic institutions.

The Faculty is active in many research areas: theoretical computer science, algorithms for big data, optimisation, machine learning, computer vision, software engineering, and bioinformatics. We publish in leading computer science journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Software and Systems Modelling, ACM Transactions on Algorithms, Machine Learning, Theory of Computing Systems, etc.

Career

Yandex will organize workshops, internships, and academic seminars and will also be a potential employer for the students. In addition, representatives from leading Russian IT groups – the Institute for Information Transmission Problems (Kharkevich IITP RAS), the Institute for Systems Analysis (ISA RAS), and the Dorodnitsyn Computing center (CC RAS) – will be involved in teaching at the faculty. Such individuals will also take part in developing topics for term papers, theses and research projects.
