University of Dubuque

The University of Dubuque is a private, Presbyterian, coeducational, professional university with a foundation in the liberal arts. Our commitment is to nurturing the mind, body, and spirit as well as encouraging students to explore their fullest potential, is part of a rich Christian identity that dates back to the University's founding in 1852. 

History

The institution currently known as the University of Dubuque was founded by the Rev. Adrian Van Vliet, who was pastor of the German Presbyterian Church, now known as the First Presbyterian Church of Dubuque, in 1852 to train ministers to serve the influx of immigrants to the upper midwest. 

Education

In light of its Mission, the University will continually re-examine and adjust the core curriculum to achieve an artful and purposeful blend of the arts, sciences, humanities, and theology. Where appropriate, these disciplines will be infused within the professional programs offered. A value-laden education which focuses on justice, ethics, and responsible stewardship within a globally diverse community will be stressed.

The staff in the Student Life Department are committed to working in partnership with all students to ensure that your college experience is both rewarding and positive. The University strives to provide a learning environment that is supportive yet challenging, and we ask each and every one of you to become productive, responsible, and engaged members of this community. The University of Dubuque has a host of resources available to help you reach your educational and personal goals, but in order for this partnership to work, we need you to ask for help and seek us out when you are in need.

Housing services

Aitchison Hall is one of three first-year residence halls on campus. It is located on the north end of campus adjacent to Peters Commons. Aitchison Hall has two female floors and two male floors. A common lounge area separates the floors.

Cassat Hall is one of three first-year residence halls. Cassat Hall is located near the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center, the football field and the other athletic fields. The residence hall is co-ed, with one floor dedicated to women and three floors for men.

Library services

The Library is open to current students, faculty, and staff of the University of Dubuque with a current, valid identification card, as well as current students, faculty, and staff from Wartburg Theological Seminary (WTS), Northeast Iowa Comunity College, Loras College, and Clarke University with current, valid school indentification cards.

Medical services

The mission of the University of Dubuque Student Health Services is to promote the health and wellness of the University Community, to enhance student retention, and to support academic and personal success.

Campus life

When you talk to UD students, they’ll tell you about an active residential community where students immerse themselves in everything that college life has to offer. You’ll be challenged by a curriculum based in the liberal arts that focuses on solid career preparation. No matter what your major, you’ll be engaged in hands-on learning and the Career Resource Center will help you to explore options, hone in on career choices, and search for professional positions.

Sports facilities

The Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center, an 87,000 square foot facility opened in the fall of 2008 includes: a 6,900 square foot, 2-level fitness center including areas for cardiovascular workout and free weights/machines; a 16 foot-wide concourse running the length of the facility, overlooking the track and courts; home, visitor, officials and faculty/staff locker rooms; a juice bar/lounge area.

With over 50 unique student organizations, you’re bound to find one to join!Participating in campus activities is an important part of life at the University of Dubuque. The activities and events planned by the various clubs and organizations supplement your academic life with valuable experience, fun, and friendship. Out-of-classroom programs provide opportunities for vocational growth, leadership training, community service, and personal development. The people who get involved in student activities are people like you, so GET INVOLVED! 

The University of Dubuque is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, 230 South LaSalle Street, Suite 7-500, Chicago, Illinois, 60604 and the State of Iowa Department of Education. Specific programs are accredited by the State of Iowa Department of Education, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the Aviation Accreditation Board International. The University holds institutional membership with the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education and the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
