Department of Arts & Humanities

This wonderful academic community, the University of Sheffield, is such an important place for all the communities that we serve across our region, the UK and the world. And this is a crucial time for us to be thinking about our strategy.

History

The University grew out of the Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), Firth College (1879) and the Sheffield Technical School (1884). These three institutions came together in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield, which in turn became the University of Sheffield in 1905.

Campus life

Sheffield is an exciting place to spend your student years. It's big enough to have everything - clubs, café bars, shops, sports facilities, restaurants - but it's small enough to let you stay in touch easily with your friends.

Sports facilities

Designated the first National City of Sport, Sheffield regularly hosts international events and offers world-class sporting facilities.

U Sport at the University offers something for everyone, whether you want to compete at club level, join a gym or play sport just for fun.

The Peak District National Park, one of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty in the country, borders Sheffield and is only minutes away by car or bus. Perfect for walkers, mountain-bikers, climbers and anyone who loves the outdoors.

Student clubs

When you become a student you are automatically a member of the Union. Sheffield Union is often recognised as the best Students' Union in the UK.

The Union is run by students for students and is at the heart of student life. As you'd expect, it provides a packed programme of gigs, clubs, films and much more. There are over 300 different clubs and societies to get involved with, so you'll never be short of something to do.
