As a modern, vocational university, Northampton has held full university status for just over 20 years but has existed as an institution of Higher education for much longer. We have developed great expertise in Social Enterprise and were the first UK University to be recognized as an Ashoka U campus.
Our particular strengths include Business disciplines; our Business School was nominated as the Top UK Business School for 3 years running. We are also strong in Education, Nursing, creative Arts, Computing and Engineering. We enjoy a world-wide reputation in Waste Management and in Leather Technology.
Our research activity is based around the following Research Institutes, Centres and Groups:
Many of our programmes have 100% employment and our overall employability rate of 95% and above for five years running (2010m – 2015) makes us one of the most successful UK universities when it comes to preparing students for employment. Work placements, internships, international study trips and up to a full year’s paid placement on many programmes support our commitment to developing employability skills alongside academic skills and knowledge. In addition to our own, on-campus employment agency our staff has strong links with their respective industries and students benefit from extensive opportunities to network with senior professionals within their discipline.
International Student Services provides a one-stop-shop advice servioce for students who encounter difficulties with immigration, visas, employment, accommodation, health, disability – any and everything connected to life at the University. Specialists are available for more complex matters. Our International Welcome Programme ensures all new international students are fully inducted into the University, can access health care and banking facilities and are introduced to the social life of the University and the wider UK. The multi-faith Chaplaincy provides practical and spiritual support for all students regardless of belief, sexuality or gender.
The University offers almost 2,000 student bed spaces in a wide variety of configurations ranging from single en-suite to basic twin accommodation. On-campus options exist on all of our sites: our new Waterside Campus offers brand new accommodation in apartments, town houses and single rooms; we have town-centre accommodation, on-campus accommodation at Avenue and apartment-style living is available at our out-of-town Park Campus. We offer an Accommodation Service to students wishing to live in the private sector, which is both plentiful and affordable in Northampton.
The Library provides print, online and multimedia resources, adaptable and IT rich learning environments, silent and group study spaces, plus expert help and support in finding and managing information. The University’s virtual learning environment is also managed here. At Waterside, each Faculty will have dedicated library facilities on their teaching floor of the Learning Hub.
Wi-fi is available free of charge throughout the University and IT facilities are available for use in numerous locations around the University, including laptop loans in the Library. The IT Helpdesk supports students with software and hardware issues and all new students can choose to receive a free laptop with study software on enrolment.
All international students are advised how to register with a GP. Those living on campus have access to our on-campus Heath Services including doctor, counselling and mental health professionals.
Our new Waterside Campus opens in September 2018, housing academic, accommodation, social and sports facilities. This purpose-built campus is just a few minutes’ walk from the Cultural Quarter of Northampton and will offer cafes, restaurants and a shop. It’s just a short walk to a large supermarket. The Students’ Union recently opened a new town centre venue, just a few minutes’ walk from campus. The Platform hosts a brand new nightclub, cafe bar, art shop and volunteer training space. A small number of courses will be based at our Avenue Campus for one further year, where there are also accommodation and social facilities.
The Engine Shed, a Grade II listed building, is being lovingly restored to house the Students’ Union, home of sports, societies and student services. A place to meet and grab a coffee or a bite to eat, as well as a place for society events. Our sports dome is designed to Sport England dimensions, it will be suitable for a variety of sports including netball, badminton, volleyball and basketball. Our Sports Pavilion with changing facilities serves our three multi-use games areas and a floodlit full size all-weather sports pitch. Sports are free at the University. We have entered into a partnership with Trilogy Leisure to offer discounted membership at their superb gyms and swimming pools, located nearby.
Joining a society is free and there’s lots of choice, from course-based groups to those based around cultural, religious, political or ethical sensibilities. Many of our societies are based on common interests, such as the popular Salsa Society, or the Pole Fitness Society. Our Meditation Society recently scooped the award for Best Hobby and Interest Society at the National Union of Students’ Society Awards 2018. Societies regularly run social events, meetings and trips. If you can’t find the society you are looking for, then why not start your own - we will help you set it up!
Our courses offer accreditation from professional bodies, as appropriate.
