History

Founded in 1829, it became a university in 1967: from trade school to international research university in two centuries. In a history that will soon span 190 years, many names, events, numbers and dates tell the story of how the University of Stuttgart evolved.

Get started on your search by making inquiries with the Housing Section of Studend Services Stuttgart and applying there for a place to live. This is best done before you begin your studies. Student Services also offers barrier-free apartments [de] for disabled students and two-room apartments [de] for students with children. In total, Student Services Stuttgart maintains 35 residential buildings with more than 6800 rooms located downtown, on the Vaihingen campus, in Ludwigsburg, Esslingen, and Göppingen.

Library services

The University of Stuttgart has numerous scientific collections that cover a wide range of objects from the natural sciences, humanities and technology. Various departments, the university library and the university archive are home to diverse classical academic object collections, as well as unusual and unique collections.

Medical services

  • Non-EU students under 30 have to purchase mandatory student health insurance from a German state health insurance provider. This insurance costs about EUR 120 per month and covers most medical and dental costs. 
  • As an EU citizen you are required to bring an European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your insurance provider in your home country.
