School of Law

History

The City of Edinburgh has been a major centre for Law since the middle ages, and for more than 300 years the University has trained generations of the world's finest legal minds.

Education

Edinburgh Law School is committed to equality and diversity, and to ensuring our school is welcoming and inclusive to all who choose to study, work or visit here.

At Edinburgh Law School, you'll enjoy access to superb resources and facilities, and an educational experience designed to unlock your full potential.

Class sizes for on-campus programmes are taught with a maximum of 25 students, and delivered by experts in their field of knowledge.

You will have access to one of the largest collections of legal documents in the UK in our Law Library and we provide an excellent array of computing and study facilities for all of our students.

Community and support

Our postgraduate community is very active, with many reading groups, seminars, events and societies for you to participate in. You will also receive a personal tutor on registration, who will help guide you through your studies.

Edinburgh Student Law Review

The Edinburgh Student Law Review is the first of its kind in Scotland. Managed and written entirely by the Schools student body, it aims to provide a forum for law students to engage in a more analytical approach to the study of law.

Students from all levels and legal disciplines are encouraged to submit articles, case notes and updates, which are published in the Review each year.

Funding

We understand that postgraduate study can be a significant financial commitment. We therefore have a range of scholarships and bursaries that can make the difference and ease the financial burden.

Campus life

For over 300 years, Law at the University of Edinburgh has been based at the beautiful Old College Campus. This stunning 18th century building is built around a quad which was recently completed in the original design of the architect, Henry Playfair. The Law School's home in Old College is currently undergoing an exciting and ambitious refurbishment, which will restore and renew the interior of the building to create a state-of-the-art campus fit for 21st century legal scholarship. During this refurbishment, the School will be based in the David Hume Tower, at the heart of the University's George Square campus and at the centre of humanities and social science teaching.
