About

History

Our roots go back to 1892 when the West Ham Technical Institute became a provider of vocational education for the local community, offering science, engineering and art courses. In 1970 the Institute merged with local colleges to form the North East London Polytechnic. We became the Polytechnic of East London in 1988 and, in 1992, the University of East London.

Education

At the University of East London, you’ll benefit from expert teaching from specialists who are at the forefront of their fields. Many of our academics combine teaching with their lives as leading professionals and researchers. You could be taught by a Turner Prize winner, an Olympic gold medalist, a business leader or a terrorism advisor to national governments. Whether you’re interested in undergraduate, postgraduate study or research, our academic staff will give you a huge amount of personal support during and after your studies. You’ll also get access to the latest industry trends and learn how to apply your new skills and knowledge in context.

Research

UEL is one of the UK’s leading modern universities for research. We’ve nearly doubled our output of ‘world-leading’ research over the last six years. As London’s leading university for civic engagement, we’re committed to making a difference to the lives of people in communities worldwide. Our research is renowned for its ‘real-world’ impact. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, our Psychology research was ranked equal first in the country for its impact – ahead of Oxford and Cambridge.
