About

History

South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences – Xamk – started on 1 January 2017 when Kymenlaakso and Mikkeli Universities of Applied Sciences merged.  South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences – Xamk – is an institute of higher education which focuses on wellbeing, technology and creative industries.

Our campuses are located in Kotka, Kouvola, Mikkeli and Savonlinna.

Education

Bachelor’s degree studies include basic studies, professional studies, practical training and a bachelor’s thesis. Completing these studies makes students qualified for posts requiring a degree of higher education. The degree can be completed through full-time or blended studies.

Master’s degrees allow students to further develop their professional competence after working life experience. Students learn to obtain and process the research information of their professional field and to apply it in their work.

Research

Our goals are to help businesses thrive and to generate new entrepreneurship. We have approximately 250 ongoing projects annually, in which our experts find, test and develop new products and services, or conduct research for the needs of businesses and the world of work.

Our focus areas include:

  • Digital Economy
  • Forest, the Environment and Energy
  • Sustainable Wellbeing
  • Logistics and Seafaring.

Career

Close cooperation with workplaces constitutes an important part of each degree programme. We engage in various forms of collaboration with local companies and organisations. In addition to work placements and thesis work, students work on real-life assignments and development projects as part of their studies.

These contacts are very useful for you after graduation as references and evidence of work experience.

The studies enable you to build a career path that is based on your own interests. You may choose complementary courses from the extensive range of courses provided by Xamk:

  • research, development skills
  • leadership, entrepreneurship
  • communication and network skills
  • other current themes

Services

Student services

On each campus, there is a Student Affairs Office that offers you guidance and help you in many different matters.

Every degree programme has  a student affairs advisor who is your contact person to the Student Affairs Office but don’t be afraid to ask for help also from the other advisors. And let’s not forget the e-services for student affairs that are at your use 24/7!

Student tutors are senior students who act as your peer counsellors. They help new students to become familiar with the school and its routines. When new students start their studies, student tutors help the members of the student group to learn to know each other and develop team spirit.

Housing services

The housing situation in South-East Finland is good, compared to the situation in the Helsinki region or other similar European metropolises.

The rental level is relatively low, and finding affordable accommodation is quite easy.

Degree students arrange housing themselves before their arrival in Finland. Unfortunately, Xamk cannot offer accommodation for students. Please, look for more information from new students website.

Please remember that campuses are conveniently located in the town centre or nearby.
