University of North Dakota

Founded in 1883, six years before North Dakota became a state, our founders believed they could make a difference. And they did.

Our first graduating class of six women and two men were our first Leaders in Action. Most notably, Dr. Cora Smith King was the first woman to receive a medical license in the state and was a fierce advocate for women.

The University maintains its original mission in liberal arts, business, education, law, medicine, engineering and mines; and has also developed special missions in nursing, fine arts, aerospace, energy, human resources, and international studies. It provides a wide range of challenging academic programs for undergraduate, professional and graduate students through the doctoral level.

UND is a Carnegie Doctoral Research Institution with an international reputation for research and scholarship, notably in health sciences, nutrition, energy and environmental protection, aerospace, and engineering. Although UND's research is felt around the world, it plays an important role in the emergence of North Dakota as a technological and economic leader.
