Between 1943 and 1947 The Birla Education Trust was founded. The IntermediateCollege was converted into a Degree college, and later on started post-graduate courses.
BITS Pilani, actively promotes research among its staff and students. In addition to basic research, which is the backbone of any applied research, the Institute also gives adequate importance and support to applied research.
At BITS Pilani, the faculty are encouraged to publish their findings in reputed journals and present papers at conferences. Support is given to participate in national and international conferences and thereby network with experts from India and abroad.
About or Nearly 500 students from the Pilani campus sit for placements every semester, of these almost 100% succeed in securing a job.

About or Nearly 160 reputed companies visited our campuses in the previous placement season 2010 -2011, a number of whom were repeat visitors.
ARCD, Academic Registration and Counselling Division, serves as the central node for all the academic and registration activities of BITS. Students get guidance and information regarding their academic performance through the division. Apart from providing counseling to students, maintenance of students' academic history is also done by the division. ARC facilitates the usage of various academic flexibilities available to the students.
The Institute is fully residential and hostel accommodation is provided to all students. Permission to become day-scholar may be granted only under exceptional circumstances where student's parents or close relatives are residents of Pilani. There are eleven hostels for boys and one hostel complex for girls.
The hostel rooms are fully furnished. Common room facilities with Cable TV and telephone are available in each hostel. Internet connectivity has been provided in all hostel rooms. Solar water heating systems are provided in all the hostels.
