In 1965, Florida Senator Robert M. Haverfield introduced Senate Bill 711, which instructed the state Board of Education and the Board of Regents (BOR) to begin planning for the development of a state university in Miami.
As Miami's first and only public research university, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, FIU is worlds ahead in its service to the academic and local community.
At FIU, we search the world for solutions to global problems. At the North Pole, Professor David Kadko fingerprints the geochemistry of the Arctic Ocean. From the Aquarius reef base – the world’s only undersea research laboratory – researchers gain an unparalleled perspective on climate change and more, while the Wall of Wind brings the destructive force of a Category 5 hurricane into the laboratory, enabling one-of-a-kind research opportunities. At the Accelerated Bridge Construction center, we work to solve the infrastructure challenges of the future. And at the Center for Children and Families, researchers work to improve the lives of children suffering from mental health disorders.
The Career and Talent Development Department at Florida International University has partnered with Handshake - a modern career development platform - to replace our previous Panther JobLink Symplicity System and be your one-stop-shop for launching your career.
FIU Housing is the real college experience. Student housing community is vibrant and bustling with 3,200 students who live, work and play surrounded by FIU's lush, expansive campus. Not only is it the safer choice, but on-campus housing is an environment dedicated to meeting all students' needs. Housing is available on Modesto Maidique Campus (MMC) and Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC). Make Panther Territory your home.
FIU has six libraries, Green Library, FIU's main library; the Glenn Hubert Library (Biscayne Bay Campus), the Wolfsonian Library, the Engineering Library, the Law Library, and the Medical Library. The Green Library, Hubert Library, and Engineering Library Service Center are under the direction of the Dean of University Libraries.
SHS provides affordable and accessible student-focused medical care and promotes healthy lifestyles through education, mentorship, and research activities thus facilitating the academic success of our students.
Florida International University has seventeen varsity sports teams, named the Panthers. The Panthers' athletic colors are blue and gold, and compete in the NCAA Division I as part of Conference USA in all sports. Three main sports facilities serve as home venues for Panther athletics. The Panthers football team plays at FIU Stadium ("The Cage"), the men and women's basketball and volleyball teams play at the FIU Arena, and the men's baseball team plays at FIU Baseball Stadium. Other athletics venues include the Aquatic Center, Tennis Complex, softball fields, and various other recreational fields.
The Student Government Association presides over and funds the over 300 student clubs and organizations and honor societies at the university and has an operating budget of over $14 million.
