Established as the Borough Polytechnic Institute in 1892, the original aim of London South Bank University (LSBU) was 'to promote the industrial skill, general knowledge, health and well-being of young men and women', which remains remarkably similar today.

Student services

If you’re an undergraduate or a postgraduate student who would like to experience life as a student in London for a semester or a year, our Study Abroad Programme is for you. At LSBU, we offer course paths that build on and enhance your studies.

You’ll study alongside our current students to ensure you get the most from this cultural, social and intercollegiate experience. Depending on your level and course of study, you’ll have the option to select modules that fit with your course or programme at your home university.

Housing services

London South Bank University (LSBU) has four halls of residence, giving students a safe and comfortable base. The furthest away from our Southwark campus is a 10-minute walk away from all its amenities, leaving students always feeling close to home.

The University has 1,396 single self-contained study/bedrooms spread across four residential buildings.

Our single occupancy, self-catered rooms feature a:

  • choice of en-suite or standard rooms
  • all rooms come with Wi-Fi to access the internet and University network
  • on-site laundry facilities
  • on-site management teams and on-call staff for emergencies if assistance is needed

Library services

The Perry Library, at Southwark, holds over 300,000 print books, hundreds of study spaces and over 90 open access PCs. We subscribe to 150 online databases providing access – both on and off campus – to over 18,000 journals, plus e-books, TV and radio programmes, and a wide range of other specialist data to assist research and study.

ICT services

The Learning Resources Centre on the Southwark campus holds over 400 open access PCs plus 10 Apple Macs. A wide range of software is provided, including specialist subject-specific packages.

Medical services

There are a range of doctors and healthcare providers near the campus and the general health and safety of our students is very important to us.

Campus life

Our campus university is located close to some of London’s most famous landmarks such as Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace, among others. Students also have the option of living in one of our Halls of Residence which are located just minutes from the university.

Few city centre campuses in London are as compact as ours in the Elephant and Castle.

Sitting on the border of the city's Zones 1 and 2 for public transport, we're minutes from the entertainment buzz of bars, restaurants and clubs, plus many of the city's world-renowned galleries, theatres, museums and attractions.

Sports facilities

Our Academy of Sports houses fitness classes, sports clubs, Human Performance Centre and Elite Sports

Whether it's a feature of your studies or for keeping fit, our Academy of Sport brings together educational opportunities, vocational placements and quality services. It combines academic and non-academic functionalities through taught courses, research units, sports science support services, sport development and facility staff.

Student clubs

Our active Students' Union runs clubs, societies, events and support services

Our Students' Union (SU) is the centre of the student social scene and home to a number of services.

The union is a hub for a range of societies that cover cultural, political and social interests. Specialist staff at the Union can also advise on any course concerns and external matters our students experience.

It is also the main socialising space for students - a place for a drink and a chat with friends.
