Florida State University

History

Florida State University, one of the largest and oldest of the 12 institutions of higher learning in the State University System of Florida, had its beginning as early as 1823 when the Territorial Legislature began to plan a higher education system.

Education

Florida State offers leading undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. Many units have programs that consistently rank among the nation’s top twenty-five public universities, including those in Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Meteorology, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Information, Creative Writing, Public Policy, Business and Law.

Florida State University's arts programs—dance, film, music and theatre—rank among the finest in the world.

Research

Research and creative activity is about discovery. It’s about having an idea and finding the right environment in which to explore that idea. At FSU, we take great pride in our ability to provide supportive environments for the exploration of all types of ideas; and with approximately $200 million in research expenditures each year, and more than 50 prominent research centers and institutes calling our campuses home, FSU continues to be one of the top idea-incubators in the nation.

Career

The FSU Career Center provides comprehensive career services to students, alumni, employers, faculty/staff and other members of the FSU community.

Student services

The goals of the Division of Student Affairs are to facilitate student development, celebrate differences, and promote civic and global responsibility in both formal and informal educational experiences. The Division accomplishes these tasks through utilizing best practices as identified by international higher education professional organizations to create evidence-based programs and services.

Housing services

While there is no residency requirement, those of us who work with college students firmly believe that living on campus has a positive effect on students' academic success and successful transition to college. There is longstanding research which shows that students who live in a residence hall for at least one year do better academically, are more likely to graduate on time, and look back on their total experience more favorably than those who never lived on campus.

ICT services

The ITS Service Desk is the first point of contact for assistance with services offered by Information Technology Services.

Medical services

FSU’s fully accredited Primary Care facility, providing a full range of medical services and outreach programs.

Campus life

While Florida State’s beautiful main campus is in Tallahassee, the university is well represented around the state and around the world.

Student clubs

The Student Government Association is the student’s voice at Florida State University with three branches of the government–executive, legislative, and judicial. SGA budgets more than ten million dollars of activity and service fees each year to Student Organizations, the Oglesby Union, and Campus Recreation.

The Florida State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The university was first accredited in 1915. Some departments and programs are accredited through discipline-specific accrediting agencies and governing bodies.
