History

  • The Queensland University of Technology Act was passed in 1988, following approval of university status for the Queensland Institute of Technology. Queensland University of Technology (QUT) began operating in January 1989.
  • Since then we have grown to accommodate more than 40,000 students and offer more than 400 courses and extensive research programs. We've become the university for the real world.

Employers can visit campus throughout the academic year to present to students about their job opportunities or to present a workshop on a career-related topic.

Student services

You will have access to a range of free services within your course and outside of class:

  • Language and learning support, such as writing and assignment feedback, study and presentation skills
  • Maths, science and IT support, such as understanding course content, developing STEM skills and guidance with assessment items
  • Career management skills that put you in charge of your future and enable you to investigate career options while building your employability
  • Leadership and development such as attending workshops, conferences and volunteering on campus to understand your leadership style, skills and strengths. 

Housing services

  • Students can get help finding somewhere to live with our accommodation services.

  • They can rent a room in a student residential complex, which usually includes a bed, study desk, some storage, and shared bathrooms, kitchens and common rooms. Costs range from $265-500 a week. 

Library services

There are two libraries at Gardens Point:

  • Gardens Point Library, which provides resources and services for students studying business, and science and engineering
  • QUT Law Library, which provides resources and services for students studying law.

Our libraries have:

  • printing and copying services
  • computer labs and wireless internet
  • a helpdesk for assistance with assignments. 

Medical services

  • QUT Optometry Clinic provides lens prescriptions and eye examinations,contact lenses, children's vision, and vision rehabilitation.
  • Nutrition & Dietetics offers individual consultations as well as nutrition and lifestyle groups and cooking demonstrations.
  • Podiatry provides general foot care, diabetes management, children's foot care and orthotics and treatment for acute foot problems.

Campus life

  • Gardens Point campus: Our business, law, and science and engineering students are based at Gardens Point, right in the centre of Brisbane.
  • Kelvin Grove campus: The main campus for our creative industries, education and  health students, Kelvin Grove is located in the thriving Kelvin Grove Village. 

Sports facilities

  • As a student, you'll have the opportunity to get involved in premier and social sport competitions. Social sports include aquatics, basketball, netball, volleyball, dodgeball, touch football and soccer, as well as social dance classes. 
  • The Gardens Point Aquatic Centre offers a  50 metre FINA-accredited indoor pool. The Aquatic Centre at our Science and Engineering Centre at our Gardens Point campus is open to students, staff and the public.
  • Gardens Point's state-of-the-art cycle centre makes riding to and from the city easy. It's open seven days a week, and allows you to store your bike on campus.

Student clubs

Joining a club is a great way to meet like-minded fellow students who share your interests and build lifelong friendships. We've got clubs for recreation, music, sport, social justice and heaps more, including clubs and societies connected to your course or study area.

You can meet representatives from over 150 student clubs at Orientation Week.
