History

Founded in 1908 by the Honourable George and Ethel Swinburne as the ‘Eastern Suburbs Technical College’. The first students enrolled in classes including woodwork, science and mathematics and from the 1970s offered degrees in engineering, accounting, chemistry and arts. Swinburne has continued to evolve, gaining university status in 1992.

Education

At Swinburne, we offer courses that connect you with your chosen industry and flexible study options to give your career a headstart.

Research

We have a reputation for quality education and world-class research – that’s why Swinburne attracts highly qualified academics and educational leaders. You’ll learn from academic staff who not only have industry experience but who also bring that experience to life through their teaching.

Our research creates jobs, improves lives, connects science and technology with business and the community, and elicits real change in the world. We have led advancements in solar sciences, advanced manufacturing and sustainable technologies.

Career

At Swinburne, we’re dedicated to providing you with the strategies to manage your career success. If you’re a student or recent graduate, you can access an array of resources, such as workshops, events, job-boards and individual support, depending on your level of needs.

Student services

  • Starting your studies at an Australian university can be a daunting experience – but don't worry! At Swinburne, we have support services available, including an International Student Advisory and Support team who can help you settle into the university life in Australia.
  • International Student Advisors (ISAs) can help with big and small questions you might have – from adjusting to study at university to navigating through life in Melbourne. They can also refer you to other personal and specialist services when you need it.

Housing services

At Swinburne, you can stay in college rooms, studio apartments or shared apartments. Explore your options with our virtual tours.

  • College rooms: You’ll get your own private room in a close-knit community of 80 residents, hang out in the common rooms to catch up on study or the latest gossip, and then head to one of the local cafes, the gym or the city with your friends to take a break from your latest assignment!
  • Shared apartments: Apartments on campus accommodating two to four people offer greater independence and are perfect for students wanting more privacy than college rooms.
  • Studio apartments: Studio apartments on campus offer the ultimate in privacy and independent living.

Library services

We operate three campus libraries at Hawthorn, Croydon and Wantirna. Our extensive online collections are available 24 hours a day.

ICT services

Latelabs are study spaces and computer labs, located at each campus, giving you extended access outside of library opening hours. Outside the library opening hours, you must use your Swinburne ID card to access a Latelab.

Medical services

We offer comprehensive professional health and medical services to support the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of the Swinburne community. The student wellbeing support line is available 24 hours Monday – Sunday, including public holidays.

Campus life

Swinburne has three campuses located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne — at Hawthorn, Croydon and Wantirna — offering tertiary education for higher education as well as Pathways and Vocational Education Training (VET). We also have a fourth campus in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Sports facilities

With an array of sports clubs, fitness facilities and assistance for elite athletes, we have various programs available to help you burn off some steam or hone your craft to reach your sporting potential. You can even represent the Swinburne Razorbacks on a national level!

Student clubs

  • Join a club or student organisation and meet like-minded people, explore new hobbies and get involved with the issues you care about. Find your people.
  • Student Union - An independent, student-run representation, welfare and events association; guiding students to not only unlock their academic potential, but make memories and relationships that will last a lifetime.
