Virginia Tech

History

On October 1, 1872, Addison “Add” Caldwell walked 26 miles from Craig County to enroll as the first student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Ever since then, Virginia Tech has been fulfilling its role as a leading land-grant university. The tiny college, originally housed in the old Olin and Preston Institute near what is now Alumni Mall, has grown into a world-class university.

Education

With more than 150 majors and options to choose from, you’ll experience a matchless education at Virginia Tech.

Research

Virginia Tech research answers society’s grand challenges, invents technologies and products, and adds to the world’s intellectual capital.

With our partners in industry, government, and philanthropy, we bridge the continuum between curiosity and commercialization. Along the way, we enrich quality of life and provide a healthy, secure future for the nation and the world.

Career

Empowering students to pursue a path to a fulfilling career requires more than simply helping them earn a degree.

At Virginia Tech, our Career and Professional Development advisors help Hokies explore potential careers and majors, land internships, and tailor résumés for future employment. Whether you need a 10-minute walk-in meeting or a scheduled appointment, we are available and ready to help you.

Housing services

The 47 on-campus residence halls are home to about 9,300 students and are kept safe, clean, and well-maintained by Virginia Tech’s Housing and Residence Life.

Your room is just the beginning of your on-campus experience. Common spaces for studying and social gatherings, community kitchens, and outdoor amenities, such as volleyball courts, provide fun and creative places to see old friends and make new ones.

Library services

The university’s libraries play an essential role by providing a diversity of resources to produce, disseminate, use, share, and sustain data and information.

Our collection includes:

  • Primary Civil War documents in Special Collections
  • Women in Art + Architecture collection
  • More than 1 million e-books
  • More than 6,800 DVDs
  • Thousands of 16 mm films
  • Bestselling books, including recently published books

Medical services

Schiffert Health Center is Virginia Tech's on-campus health care center. Our clinical staff of 13 doctors, nurse practitioners, and physicians assistants administer care for a wide range of medical concerns.

Campus life

Virginia Tech’s main campus in Blacksburg has 2,600 acres, 213 buildings, an airport, Lane Stadium, Cassell Coliseum, the Moss Arts Center, and an adjacent research park.

As the university meets the global demands of the future, the Blacksburg campus is constantly adapting to fulfill learning and research needs.

Sports facilities

Sport club teams represent Virginia Tech and play against other colleges and universities, but are not part of the university's NCAA athletics program. Sport clubs are supported by Recreational Sports, but each team is run by a set of officers.

Most sport club teams hold tryouts (some prior to the start of school) so it is important to get in touch with a club officer to find out details. However, some sport clubs require no prior skill at the sport – they'll teach you what you need to know! You can find something new to try.

Student clubs

At Virginia Tech, we have approximately 800 student organizations that bring excitement, programs, and community to our campus.

Virginia Tech is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award doctorate, masters, baccalaureate and associate degrees.
