About

History

Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College had its origin in land grants made by the United States government in 1806, 1811 and 1827 for use as a seminary of learning. In 1853, the Louisiana General Assembly established the Seminary of Learning of the State of Louisiana near Pineville, La. The institution opened January 2, 1860.

Career

How can you obtain an internationally oriented career? The first step is to talk with a career counselor, such as those at LSU Career Services.

Services

Housing services

While waiting to receive your official LSU acceptance packet, you should start thinking about whether you want to live on- or off-campus. If you want to live on campus, research on-campus housing options by visiting LSU Residential Life's housing options. You should also remember that international students are required to arrive to campus a few weeks early to attend international student orientation, and you may need temporary housing for this time.

Library services

The LSU Libraries includes Middleton Library and the adjacent Hill Memorial Library. Together, the libraries contain more than 4 million volumes and provide additional resources such as expert staff, technology, services, electronic resources, and facilities that advance research, teaching, and learning across every discipline.

ICT services

The recent addition of a Beowulf cluster provides a computer system that will run at 2.1 TeraFlops, or 2.1 trillion floating-point operations per second. This would rank it among the six or seven fastest computers in the world and second among academic institutions worldwide. An initiative in Biological Computing is a part of this new investment by the State of Louisiana.

Medical services

The Wellness and Health Promotion Staff strives to provide the LSU community with health information and resources that can positively impact students’ lives. One of the ways that we achieve this goal is through face-to-face outreach efforts.

Student Life

Campus life

LSU is located on more than 2,000 acres and is known for the 1,200 large oak trees, valued at over $50 million. The campus landscaping was called “a botanical joy” in its listing among the 20 best campuses in America in Thomas Gaines’s The Campus as a Work of Art. LSU homes two Indian Mounds that were created by Native Americans more than 5,000 years ago and functioned as territorial markers or symbols of group identity.  In 1999, the mounds were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sports facilities

Faculty and staff are admitted at no charge to regular season volleyball, gymnastics, women’s basketball, softball, track and field, and baseball games with a valid LSU ID (based on availability).

Throughout football season, Athletics often offers individual football tickets at a discounted rate for faculty and staff.

Student clubs
