History

Today's Victoria University is a direct descendant of Footscray Technical School (the School), which first opened its doors to students in February 1916. It was intended by local businesses and community to offer students an education that would fit them for a role in the skilled workforce and raise students out of the ranks of unskilled labourers.

Education

At Victoria University we are taking the national agenda for STEM education forwards, by working to provide students and teachers with:

  • mathematical and statistical understanding and skills that are necessary for STEM
  • qualified teachers of STEM subjects at all levels, especially primary and early years
  • alignment with industry needs, including understanding new job opportunities in data management
  • entrepreneurs who can translate scientific knowledge into businesses that create future jobs in the globally changing economy.

Research

We promote a research culture that is committed to responsible and ethical research practices and the open exchange of ideas. Our focus is on multidisciplinary research that responds to market and community needs in Australia and overseas.

Research and training and VU reflects these values:

  • rigour and excellence in critical inquiry
  • innovation, relevance and impact
  • integrity and ethics in research conduct
  • partnerships and collaboration
  • intellectual fulfilment.

Housing services

Located on the Footscray Park Campus and operated by UniLodge, the building is only minutes walk from the hub of Footscray city, transportation options and the beautiful Maribyrnong river. It's also just a short walk to Footscray Nicholson Campus and the Footscray railway station is only two stops to the city and our City Campus.

Library services

The Library provides essential learning materials within the unit space on VU Collaborate and through the Library Guides. Library Guides are online guides that support student learning, as well as staff and researchers, at Victoria University (VU).

ICT services

We provide a range of IT assistance and support services for staff and students.

You can visit one of our support kiosks to get help on campus. If you can't make it to campus or need support after hours, you can submit a request online, or call us and leave a message.

Medical services

Our clinics provide services to maintain and improve your health, and to help you look and feel good while improving your performance in everyday life. All students, staff and members of the public are welcome.

Our clinics are open to the public, with measures in place to ensure a safe and healthy working and learning space for our community, clients, staff and students.
