About

History

Aston University received its Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth II on 22 April 1966.1875

In 1895 the Birmingham Municipal Technical School separated from the Birmingham and Midland Institute. Dr W E Sumpner was appointed as Principal and classes were taught in chemistry, physics, metallurgy and electrical engineering.

At Aston we conduct high-quality research in all of our academic Schools: Aston Business School; Aston Medical School, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Life and Health Sciences, and School of Languages and Social Sciences.

Student services

Aston is a safe campus to live and study and we have a number of systems in place to ensure your safety, security and wellbeing are protected. Student safety is a priority for Aston University and the outstanding service by Aston’s Security Team is recognised through the award of ‘Security Team of the Year 2019’ by AUCSO (Association of University Chief Security Officers).Staying safe and reporting any incidents is the shared responsibility of our whole community and there are some simple steps you can follow to give you extra vigilance and peace of mind.

Housing services

When you apply for Aston, you have the choice of either a room in a 5 bed or 7 bed flat. These flats are split between 3 buildings, each with similar facilities and proximity to Aston's main building and other campus facilities.

The Residence Tutors are volunteer postgraduate students who assist in ensuring the provision and delivery of an effective system of pastoral care and welfare suport for students resident in Aston Student Village.

Library services

  • You automatically become a member of the Library as soon as you start at Aston University.  You will need your uniCARD to enter the building, so make sure you always have it with you.
  • The library has thousands of eBooks and electronic journals that you can access from anywhere - not just on campus! You can also borrow a laptop, or just come here to study with your own device.
