Marshall University

History

One of West Virginia’s first public institutions of higher education, Marshall University was founded as Marshall Academy in 1837 and named after Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Marshall (1755-1835).

The institution became Marshall College in 1858 and attained university status in 1961.

Education

Student services

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRiO grant program. Other TRiO programs that you may have heard of include Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Sciences, Veterans Upward Bound, Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, and the Ronald E.McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program.

These programs were established to assist students overcome class, social, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education.

Each serves a slightly different population and many work in conjunction with one another to support students through varying portions of their academic careers.

Housing services

  • Buskirk Hall is a six story all female residence hall.
  • The First Year Residence Halls, North and South, are four story freshmen residence halls.
  • Gibson Hall is a four story co-ed residence hall. Suites come in 4 person single suite, 4 person double suite and 8 person double suite.
  • Haymaker Hall is a four story co-ed residence hall. Suites come in 4 person single suite, 4 person double suite and 8 person double suite.
  • Holderby Hall is a nine story co-ed residence hall.
  • Twin Towers East is a fifteen story co-ed residence hall.
  • Wellman Hall is a four story co-ed residence hall.
  • Willis Hall is a four story co-ed residence hall. Suites come in 4 person single suite, 4 person double suite and 8 person double suite.

Library services

The Marshall University Libraries support the teaching, research and public service commitments of the University. To fulfill this responsibility, the Libraries acquire, organize, maintain and preserve materials in all appropriate formats. They also provide access and delivery of information, resources and services.

  • MU Student Health Services – provides health care services for acute illnesses to students. Located on the second floor (Family Practice) of the Marshall Medical Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
