The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the State's Historically Black 1890 Land­ Grant Institution, is a teaching, research, and doctoral institution that nurtures and launches leaders in a student-centered environment. Committed to providing high quality programs in an ethnically diverse environment, the University prepares students who will serve and shape the global economy.

History

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore opened its doors Sept. 13, 1886, when it was known initially as the Delaware Conference Academy under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Greeting the nine students who showed up that Monday were two educators, Benjamin O. Bird and his wife, Portia Lovett Bird.

Education

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the state’s historically black 1890 land-grant institution, has its purpose and uniqueness grounded in distinctive learning, discovery and engagement opportunities in the arts and sciences, education, technology, engineering, agriculture, business and health professions.

UMES is a student-centered, doctoral research degree-granting university known for its nationally accredited undergraduate and graduate programs, applied research, and highly valued graduates.

The Career & Professional Development Center is well positioned to prepare students for an ever changing global workforce. Students have access to numerous career related services offered by the University Career & Professional Development Center that involve positive career related programming, career exploration, graduate/professional school information, immersive experiential learning, internships that assist with building major specific skills, employer engagement and also exposure to state of the art career related technology.

The Division of Student Affairs consists of nine functional departments, each of which is responsible for providing a variety of student support, service, and educational programs that are accessible to all members of the UMES community. 

Housing services

 The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is an outstanding community where academic pursuits are complemented through the on-campus residential experience. Life, as a UMES resident, is unparalleled to that of the commuting student. 

Library services

Frederick Douglass Library built in 1968 was named for the self-educated abolitionist, orator and author who was born on the Eastern Shore. This three-story facility houses a multiplicity of print and non-print resources to support the mission and academic programs of the university. In 1991 the library doubled in size to 61,000 square feet. The collection includes over 211,000 volumes.

Medical services

The Health Center functions as a resource to help students achieve and maintain wellness, as well as a treatment center for health problems within the student population. The Student Health Center provides health care to the student population that is convenient, affordable and accessible within a pleasant, professional atmosphere.

Campus life

The mission of Campus Life is committed to providing educational, cultural, social, recreational, and leadership opportunities. We strive to develop and employ strategies that are responsive to the diverse needs of the University community and foster an environment conducive to increase retention and graduation rates. 

Sports facilities

UMES boasts several state-of-the-art athletic facilities that are known as some of the best in state and region. Most indoor competitions are held at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center, located on the Northwest side of campus at the corner of UMES Boulevard and Backbone Road.

Student clubs

Wide variety of student organizations reflect a diversity of student interests. Co-curricular involvement through student organizations allows students to explore, broaden their interests, test and improve skills in leadership, interpersonal relations, organizational development, group dynamics, and budgeting.

UMES is approved by the state of Maryland and fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
