Northern had its beginnings in 1913 when the Thirteenth Legislative Assembly of Montana established Northern Montana Agricultural and Manual Training School to be located at Fort Assiniboine. The bill passed on March 8, 1913, but no money was appropriated
Degree programs range from teacher education to engineering technology, emphasizing both technology and liberal arts education. MSUN programs are in the disciplines of business, nursing, engineering and mechanical technology, teacher education, natural sciences, and humanities.
Applied research and service functions are aligned with many of the university's disciplines and respond directly to the region's economic and societal needs.

Student Affairs at MSU-Northern is comprised of many programs and departments which serve students' academic, personal, social and community needs. Student Affairs is guided by principles and practices which encourage student self-governance, exposure to alternative ideas and perspectives and interaction with students, faculty and staff who share common and disparate interests.
MacKenzie Hall is equipped with study rooms, TV lounges, recreation areas and laundry rooms on each floor. Each resident room is wired with cable TV, wired and wireless internet connections. Wired telephone service is available on request. Mail is delivered daily to the Student Union Building (SUB) Monday through Friday, except holidays. Packages can be picked up at the SUB Info Desk (photo ID required).
Our local physical collections of books, photographs, and papers are stored and preserved in Special Collections and University Archives.

There are two medical providers that come to the clinic. Our site is set up like a doctor's office and they are able to evaluate and diagnose students in the same manner they would at the doctor's office. There is no cost for the visit, however, any tests may be a charge. If you need further testing, you will be sent to another location to have this done.
Northern's Residence Life program facilities includes Residence Halls (MacKenzie and Morgan) for single students and an apartment complex shared by both married student and single parent families. Our Residence Halls are equipped to house up to 200 students each.
The MSU-N fitness center is open for all MSU-Northern students, faculty & staff.Located in the basement of the Student Union Building (SUB), the facility is equipped with benches and weights, recumbent bikes, ellipticals, treadmills, multi gym, Yoga mats, resistance tubing, body bars and stability balls.It also features a 46” flat screen and stereo DVD player. Fitness Center users can check-out exercise DVD’s at the SUB Information Desk.
